We bought a 2002 Landcruiser Diesel Turbo fully decked out as a touring 4WD for our 3 month trip to the
Kimberley this year. We also bought an off-road camper trailer that we intend to keep.
Now we have time for another 3 month trip (start of September - end of November) but I'm not sure where we should go. I want to make use of the 4WD before we get rid of it.
Although we are a
young family (with 2 small kids) we have the equipment and supplies to survive 2 weeks without restocking.
Our last trip was:
Brisbane ->
Alice Springs (via
Charleville and Mt Isa)
Expore
all places around
Alice Springs (incl. Uluru,
Kings Canyon)
Alice Springs ->
Kimberley (via Tanami Track)
Explore
all places around
Kimberley, south as far as
Broome, then up
Gibb River Road and
Mitchell Plateau.
Kimberley -> Darwn (via main highways)
Darwin -> Mackay (via main highways)
Mackay ->
Brisbane (via main highways)
Any suggestions are welcome!
We were thinking of going south (we live in
Brisbane), or through the
Birdsville track, but wondering if we should get up to
Cape York or not?

After having just come up the Canning , I'd suggest it around time of next school holidays if by yourself , it will get you using your 4wd without anything extreme. Its a long 2000km drive which can be done in your car, and needs up to 2 weeks of supplies as you can top up 1/2 way along.
You just need
suspension and tyres in first class condition, and a means of external, contact - I suggest that time because a day won't go by in which you do not see other cars.
We passed and re-passed a similar car who even still had spare tyre mounted underneath , but I wouldn't do that.

That was fantastic Alan. Did you actually see anything apart from the road?

The pace sounds fast but was rather gentle - last two days were a drive (Bitumen) but the rest were ambles with plenty of stops. We saw water in the Finke and the Todd rivers. There was a fair bit of showers and some roads had bog holes and water but nothing too dramatic.
We wanted to go to
Palm Valley but road was closed. The Ernest Giles and Plenty hwys were closed just before we got to them but opened by the time we wanted to travel them.
