Anne Beadell Highway Conditions

Hi
I am just wondering if anyone has travelled the Anne Beadell Highway recently with a track update. We had planned on doing it, but canned the idea after seeing all the water in the Cooper in June.

The trouble is now that most of areas that we wanted to get to are all closed because of recent rain, and when I rang the Corner Store this morning at Cameron Corner, all road were closed and they are preparing for another 20mm or more over the coming days, meaning they will be closed for up to another week or more. Seeing I have times sort of on my side to get over the Simpson and down to the Cooper, I might have to go the very long way via Laverton and the Anne Beadell, giving the Simpson track more time to dry out before we get there.

Permits are not a problem, as I applied for them and received them in November last year, only the dates will be out by a week or so.

So if you have just returned from the AB, I would like to know if there has been any heavy rains out there. Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Stephen

Gday Stephen,
Some of my colleagues are at Emu at present, and I'm likely to speak to them over the next week as they move towards Coober Pedy.

Conditions on the SA side will be good - it is one desert that is not badly affected by rain - tends to soak in. But the Mabel Creek Road might get muddy and slippery.Coober pedy got 5mm rain this morning but otherwise its been dry this month.Tarcoola has had less rain.Maralinga got a good fall about a month ago.

Not sure where you're planning to go, but best way in is to head north from Cook. The quickest way in is to take the Oak Valley road from Colona and Ooldea. There is a big new mining road that heads north from Colona now.

But if you want to kill a week before heading to the Simpson, then drive to Nullabor, head north from Cook, and Vokes and then east to Coober pedy.

We're off up that way in 9 days time. When are you planning to go?

Cheers

Hi Phil
The recent rains that went through the whole northern area of the state has closed many areas and there is quite a bit more rain on its way into the same areas over the next few days. Having been there and done that, I am not going to get caught out there in the mud, so will kill a couple of weeks in the hope that it will dry out with warmer weather on its way.

Fiona and I have decided to kill that time in heading over to Laverton and then do the full AB. When I spoke to the Great Beyond yesterday in Laverton, she said all roads were open and in good condition, with fine clear skies and no rain for the last two weeks and nothing in the near future. As we are leaving next Wednesday, even if it has stopped raining up north in our state, it will be a good week to 10 days at least to avoid all that mud and the chance of getting bogged when travelling solo. The last thing I want to use is the MaxTrax if I can get away with it. When we get to Cooper Pedy and if the roads are still wet, it will be an end to our trip and head back home down the Stuart Highway.

Have a great trip to where ever you end up going.

Cheers

Stephen

Gday again Stephen,
I was speaking to one of the people this afternoon, who arrived in Coober Pedy today. He said there was a bit of ponded water each side of Tallaringa, but was fine to drive through. Said they had a single thunder storm 2 nights ago, but that was the only rain.

Our group (6 vehicles) will be around Emu on about 19th-20th August. I'm guessing you might have already gone past by then though.

Cheers

Hi Phil
Thanks for that. I spoke with Ilkurlka Roadhouse yesterday and he said that there was a little rain a few weeks ago, which improved things a little but has not caused any problems at all. Have a great trip.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,
We haven't been there recently but plan to travel the SBJ. and down to Blackstone this holz. I'll be ringing Giles Met station before we go.
If you don't already know, Maybe it's been graded but we did the Anne B. a couple of years ago and this is how it was.
The western side is extremely picturesque with Gum trees only in the great Vic desert. The road is much better maintained on the western side of the boarder and the local Aboriginal people have done a great job with building some shelters with R.W. tanks which came in handy one stormy night.
As you approach Emu the corrugations would shake your own teeth out of your head and it goes like that for a fair way on towards Coober Pedy.
Many injured vehicles were seen limping into Coober Pedy.
I hope it's been graded, it should look beautiful if they've had rain but the road is still passable.
It's a really good trip.We did it the year John Olsen walked accross it for charity.
Take care, safe travels.
With best wishes Ma

Went along AB Hwy in late May - little bit of drizzle but track was fine.

However these things can change very quickly

That's good to hear Scott.
It must've been graded some time between now and when we were on it.
It needed it!
Take care, safe travels.
Kind Regards, Ma.

Ma,
the South Australian side of the Anne Beadell Hwy was last graded in the 1960's. The West Australian side gets graded up to about 70k west of the border. The Cook Road was graded a couple of years ago for mining exploration.

Yep, the South Australian side is badly corrugated as always. Some say that's good as it keeps the GVD pristine; others disagree because it can wreck vehicles and there is no one who'll come out to fetch a damaged vehicle.

I usually run tyre pressures at about 18-22 psi and take it easy on those badly corrugated sections - prevents vehicle damage.

Hi Ma and Pa
We know what is in store and like others have mentioned above, low speed, reduced tyre pressures and new shockers should make the trip more bearable.

Have a Great trip on the SBJ, it is a good drive.

Cheers

Hi Phill & Stephen,
It wasn't us who limped into Coober pedy, we do what you do but it's very badly corrugated around Emu.
Enjoy your trip Stephen, if rain doesn't stop you. Rain might stop us too! anyway there's always plan B.
Take care, safe travels.
Bye for now. Ma.

G`day Stephen,
I left C/Pedy 21st last month and took the Anne B. to the Wiluna Gathering.
The section to Mable Creek was ok but after that the corrugaaaationsssss were baaaaadddd to about Emu then a gradual improvement to the border.
The WA section was much better.
This was before the heavy widespread rain that the whole centre had earlier this month that has badly affected track conditions in nearly all areas.Image Could Not Be Found
Anne Beadell Hwy SA section June 2010.

Regards,

Scrubby.

Hi Scrubby
I know what it is like, but am a gluten for punishment. You were lucky to get thought the desert when you did, as there is a lot more rain on its way, the last thing that we wanted so close before setting out. It is going to make the northern tracks in our state very interesting to say the least.

I will see how we go.

Cheers

Stephen, if you go to Cook from Nullarbor, go due north from the Roadhouse via Knowles Cave.
Great drive across the Plain on this track instead of a 50M rock strewn wide dust maker.

Hi Peter
Great picture. We will be travelling from the West from Laverton all the way along the AB to Coober Pedy. I will try and get you an update of that location you informed me about.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

Spoke with the Laverton Shire on Tuesday and they said the Anne Beadell was open but corrigated.

I see you are leaving next Wednesday and you are travelling west to east from Laverton, might see you on the track as I am leaving Perth on the Saturday after you and will be on the AB on Sunday and hopefully arriving in Coober Pedy on the Friday.

If you are in front can you smooth the bumps out please would be much appreciated. If we do catch up maybe we can tow the kayaks behind and it would be like going up and down little waves, ha ha!

Cheers

Hi Stewart
It is going to come down to the wire, but at this stage the AB looks like a 99% goer, as the only way to Mt Dare at the moment is via Kulgera.

I am planning on taking 5 days to get to Laverton and should hit the AB on the Monday, meaning you will be a day in front of us. I will keep an eye and ear out for you.

Have a great trip and may see you out there.

Cheers

There are spots to leave notes at the border (?), Percival Lakes and Voakes Hill Corner, so the 'follower' can see how far ahead you are.

Cheers,
Peter
