I already have a
Camping Trailer I'm happy with, but it won't be as useful, comfortable, quick to set up or as versatile as a caravan for most of the trips we're likely to do. We'll either use the C/T for some of our strictly
camping trips or sell it. Eiher way, we're considering what we could get for between $40k to $45k that'll be suitable for a family of 4 (kids 9 and 7) with a double bed to fit my 6' 2" frame and possibly a shower/
toilet. Our tow vehicle is a 2003 Prado GX 3lt Turbo Diesel. We live on the Central Coast of NSW and have only glimpsed at our local dealer, Coromal so far. I may be naive in what I can do with the caravan, but I like the idea of say, stopping for a powernap and being able to enter the van for a proper lay-down in a queen bed instead of winding the drivers
seat down. Stopping at a
rest area beside the road for the night to save on costs, etc. Not setting up/packing up in the rain and having to set it all up again to dry it out at home. Stopping beside the road for a quick cuppa and be out of the flies/wind/rain. Visiting friends towing our own accommodation when they haven't the room for an overnight stay. The list goes on! Having it so the kids have a bed each. Bunks or something that folds up after use? I'm 47 and want to keep the van into our eventual retirement to use accordingly.

G'day last year we sold our Jayco Outback swan (had 2 years )and before that had an offroad basic camper (had 11 years ) and purchased a 2008 jayco Sterling 24ft
toilet shower bunks and queensized bed. It has everything (now) as we are doing 2yrs around Oz. It weighs about 2.6t wet but we tow with 2006 TD landcruiser, don't know how the Prado would cope. We only went for the large van for the big trip and will probably sell when we find somewhere to live. I'm 48 with 2 boys 9 and 12, the bunks are big enough for them but not an adult. Had the axles under slung to allow us to
camp on the side of the road but would not travel offroad with it .We use the shower a lot, it's great, but we have vowed not to use the
toilet! It sits behind nicely on 90 to 100kms but 90 is economical. When travelling it is great to be able to stop make lunch and relax, or stop on the side of the road (
well off! ) and
camp for the night. The electric gas HWS and 2 85 litre tanks provides enough hot
water for 4 for 2 nights. Anyway starting to sound like a Jayco ad.It suits us but it is a very large van
Good Luck with the searching and Coramal do very similar vans but this one came up secondhand at the right time.
Cheers
Joel

"but we have vowed not to use the
toilet!" why not. Are you going to be another camper that leaves Kleenex daises all around the country.
Why wouldn't you use the
toilet?

Just because someone does not want to use their
toilet in their caravan, it does not mean they are like some of the ferals out there you are relating to.The majority of us are responsible campers and do no leave a mess behind.

Responsible campers are bygone words of the dark ages.
If 2 adults and 2 children don't use the
toilet can you explain in detail what they are going to do with their personal waste camped at the side of the road or other bush locations?
Don't tell me dig a hole.

We are just the opposite.
Even when we are in a caravan
park, we use the van's
toilet and shower.
Why bother carting towels, clothes, soap etc to a
toilet block and when you get there it's not as nice as what you have in the van?
Not to mention tinea etc.

Sorry to disapoint you, but if you think we are all living in the dark ages you obviously dont get out a lot. As to where personal waste goes, yes you are right, dig a hole and bury the waste. The majority do.Dont imply every camper has no regard for the enviroment.

jeep cherokee digging a hole is not and never will be environment friendly.
What you going send the mrs and kids out at different times of the night with a shovel to dig a hole at
camp on the side of the road. Many
places are not suitable to dig a hole. Can you imagine if everybody that camped next to a road tried to dig a hole.
we dont need more
camping pigs
to Joel and Michelle how do you intend to get rid of your personal waste if you are not going to use the
toilet?

Sounds like we are at very similar stages ....
We purchased a a family van from ian grants in traralgon in victoria and i know they have clients from all over australia ....
have a look at their range at www.iangrantscaravans.com.au and have a look at the grant tourer range ... if you happy to not have a hamburger with the lot then they seem to make a family van to fit your budget.
Cheers and good luck

Wow did I start a storm in a caravan, I mean teacup. I have been to a lot of road side stops and seen the terrible mess left by some campers, we don't do that. Most of the overnight stops we stay at have
toilets, and to those who think using a shovel is just as bad get real what do you do if staying in a tent.
But best of all this thread is about buying second hand caravans. Get back on track, Please be helpful.
Cheers
Joel
