We are planning to do some
bush camping and 4WD driving with my daughter (who now has her own - hooray). She lives in Werribee and we were hoping to find something about 1-2 hours away on the western side of
Melbourne - can anyone recommend some spots - will be there mid-September - thanks

We stopped for an overnight at the
Boar Gully campground in the
Brisbane Ranges NP. It was a small but pleasant
camp ground in a bushland setting. We were unable to do the longer walks as it was in 2006 after fires had taken their toll on this, The
Grampians and many other locations in the region.

Wombat
State Forest and Lerderderg Gorge would be pleasant in mid September.

werribee is only 1 hour from Melb and some of the best high country is east of Melb. I would recommend the extra drive time and head to
Walhalla and sorrounding areas. Absolutely beautiful and
free camping in the area. Worth looking into and prob take 2.5 hours from werribee. There is a gorgous
camp ground that is free called
Coopers creek. It has bush
toilets and is on the banks of the Thompson river. There are varied 4wd tracks in the area for varying abilities.
Just a thought but a fav of
mine.

It will still be freezing in and around
Walhalla. Believe me, it's 35 minutes from my place. I'd take the advice below re 2 hours North of
Melbourne.
Walhalla to Werribee is closer to 3 hours on most days. 3.5 hours on a bad one.

Love some of the
places mentioned above Murray , its more a matter of defining as close as possible your requirement.
I will offer another near Avoca about 2hrs west.
This is the site of Vic exploroz gathering for the last two years and its called Glen Patrick reserve. (more info on this site)
Camping on the reserve is quite civilzed , and just to the north heads off into the
forrest many tracks and
camping spots from mild to wild.
The exact spot for the reserve is 54 H 706716 5887383

If O2Murray comes to Glenpatrick that will make 3 Murray's there and we will have to change our names to Larry, Curly & Moe. I'm Larry. It would be good to have some more there.
