I have been away up the coast for the last two weeks - no tv no radio - no internet and no paper. Great way to go in the last weeks of an election cycle. However walking up the street this morning met a fishing mate who said that qld was going to introduce fishing licences. I said "I have heard nothing". Was wondering if anyone on the forum has any news? I guess it will come one day - nsw and vic for two have saltwater licences.....

So what precisely has this got to do with Labor, or recreational fishing for that matter?

So you're suggesting people shouldn't vote 'labour' because the Greens might introduce legislation which would protect a fragile marine environment/ecology for future generations and boost recreational (and other) fish stocks - assuming Labor wins the House and the Greens hold the balance in the Senate, and Labor fully supports the proposal of course? Interesting viewpoint.

I think you are being disingenuous by linking the report to the 'labour' party and alarmist by suggesting that recreational fisihing would be curtailed - nothing in the report suggests anything like that. But IF that was necessary for a time to protect the reef ecology (don't see how it would but I'm prepared to listen to the arguments) then of course it should be supported. Seeing how you asked I'm an Aussie Qld born) and a recreational fisher and like most people I know I'm concerned about local, national and international issues.

Checking dedicated fisher’s web sites will reveal that Green preferences going to Labor is a real issue for many voters.
The following is an extract from a fisher’s web site and appears typical of their feeling.
Myles.

“Labor, Greens in preference deal - more fishing restrictions

In my opinion, this article proves that a vote for labor is a vote against recreational fishing, more marine parks, tighter restrictions, and a lockout of all common sense in regards to our sport nationally.

Labor, Greens in preference deal - report

http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news...-1225893732423

LABOR and the Greens are about to seal a comprehensive preference deal that would boost the ALP's chances of remaining in government while helping the Greens achieve the balance of power in the Senate, Fairfax reports.

Greens leader Bob Brown has indicated the deal is all but done, with sources saying it's more comprehensive than that for the last election.
Labor will get crucial Greens preferences for House of Representatives seats in all but a handful of electorates where Greens branches can choose otherwise, while Labor will direct Senate preferences towards the Greens.
Labor is trailing the Coalition on the primary vote by 39 per cent to 42 per cent, but holding a two-party preferred lead of 52 to 48, according to three polls.
The Greens have 13 per cent of the primary vote and Labor needs the overwhelming majority of preferences to survive. "We're really going to need them this time," a source told the Sydney Morning Herald.”

People are obviously free to choose who they vote for, but their choice shouldn't be predicated on rumour or alarmist nonsense, whether it appears on fishing websites or elsewhere.
There are excellent reasons for protecting and preserving our environment (especially one as valuable and fragile as the GBR) and not surprisingly sometimes this means we have to give something in return (for the greater good or in fact the longer term viability of an industry - something the Oz fishing industry knows only too well).
In this case the Greens are suggesting a ban on COMMERCIAL FISHING and MINING EXPLORATION. Stretching this, as the rumour mongers are wont to do, to recreational fishing, and suggesting that it's a big Labor-Green conspiracy is simply baseless opinion (or arrant nonsense, whichever you prefer).

Bazooka,
They are not MY comments….. they are an extract from a Fisher’s website and as I said, seems typical of their sentiment…. Misinformed or not this appears to be the view of the majority on these sites. Perhaps you are better informed than those that are passionate about their sport.

Gday,

Its not just Tiwi...you need a temporary licence for recreational fishing on and over aboriginal granted land and adjoining waters any where in the NT.
Makes it hard when 85% of the Northern Territory coastline is owned by Indigenous people, and another 13% is under claim.

Cheers

West Aussie has fishing licences also, only the 'skipper' of the boat needs it here, so he can take out non licenced anglers.

We have soo many non fishing areas it gets confusing.

If they made realistic catch numbers available and moved the commercial fishies away from local towns and domestic use boat ramps I believe things would be much easier for all, but the rules are made by guys who don't know how to tie a blood knot, so they know nothing at all about the real life situation out there.

PROPOSED MARINE PARK CLOSURES
Monday 8th August
Businesses Australia wide need to be aware of what is happening to our coastline with regard
to marine park closures. If you are unaware, as are many other people, of the processes
that HAVE ALREADY been put into place by the Labor government in a deal struck with
the Greens Party, then you need to read this press release as it will hopefully inform you of
the urgency of the situation. Please look at the map enclosed with this information package
and you will see that closures suggested cover excessively large parts of the Australian
coastline. If these marine park closures come into affect, businesses and families not only
stand to lose a substantial portion of our fishing and recreational coastlines, but also the
revenue that these areas generate.
The Labor government have sprung these closures on us just prior to the election, giving
businesses very little time to gain a full understanding of the far reaching ramifications
that this proposal will have on industry across Australia. They have chosen these areas
on a quota basis with no scientific evidence to support their decision. The closures are
simply a deal made with The Greens to secure preferential votes in the upcoming election to
assist the Labor party in winning the election. The Global financial crisis although deemed
to be over, is still significantly affecting industry across Australia, yet Labor and The Greens
still deem it a viable proposal to discriminate against Australians through taking away
their livelihoods by simply removing their places of work. These proposed closures are no
different to the government saying that you will no longer be allowed to build houses in
Coffs Harbour, sell fuel in Newcastle or build boats in your factory. What they are proposing
with these marine parks by closing large areas of ocean is exactly that. Businesses in any
way related to the fishing and boating industry will suffer! As will other businesses that rely
on these industries for their livelihoods.

Laughable if it wasn't so serious. Seems the fear mongers are ramping up the rhetoric.
