Safari Turbosystem Info required

Hi All
I have a Safari Turbo unit fitted to my 98 Hilux 3.0l which has the 5L motor. I have had it checked out and it looks like it may need rebuilding due to a lot of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. Probably needs a rebuild. The question I have is does anyone know the specs i.e model no. etc on the Garrett turbo that is fitted? I've tried the Safari website but no info available.
Thanks in advance.

hi gregb2
before you blame the turbo the exhaust valve stem seals may be letting oil past into the hot exhaust manifold that will also produce a lot blue smoke and is more likely to be the cause

you have'nt said how many k's it's done or how much oil it's using /losing between oil changes
the turbo is probably a safari t25 model
cheers

Hi mazcan
Thanks for your reply. I've had it checked by a 4wd specialist and they said the motor has very little blow-by. They have fitted a catch can to monitor any oil coming from the motor. I am going away this week so will get a good idea then. Its done 197Ks and usually needs approx. 1/2 to 3/4 litre of oil between oil changes. We discussed valve stem seals too but there seems to be oil escaping from the rear of the turbo and onto the oil filter!! Possibly turbo seals. I'll have a better idea once I get back from my trip. When you say safari T25, do you mean Garrett T25? It has garrett stamped on it but I cant see any numbers.
Cheers Greg

hi gregb2
yes garrett t25 they are used on many different engines

i will add that my mazda bravo B 2500 was leaking engine oil out throught the rear of the turbo and it was dripping off and down same as yours is doing and i thought it was the turbo seal
i was getting away with about the same amount of oil as you are and the exhaust pipe at the back was getting quiet oily too

so i removed the exhaust manifold and turbo all together and found out there was engine oil in the exhaust ports when i put my finger in towards the valve there was a puddle of oil in each valve port so i knew straight away that the stem seals were done for

so i removed the head and cut the valve seats while i was at it as well as renewing the stem seals
ive done 6000k's since with no more problems
while the turbo was off i took it in and they checked it and told me it was in a1 condition
so before you let someone rebuild the turbo if its at all possible and reasonably easy
i would be removing the the exhaust manifold and checking for oil in the exhaust ports if i was you
i did all my own repairs so didnt have to pay anyone
some mechanics are all for doing a major overhall when it's not needed thats how they make a living
hope the advice further helps
cheers

hi
will just mention blow by is caused when the valve stem guides and stems are badly worn
all the seals mainly do is stop the oil escaping past the stem/guides
have fine clearance tolerances to stop blow by
your stems and guides should'nt be that worn going by the k's its done unless it had a hard life and not had the oil changed very often
but its very possible that the seals are shot once the seal rubber gets hard with heat they fail
cheers

This may or may not be relevant. I can't help with the specs you want, but I had that turbo on an earlier Fore Runner (the Oz model, not a grey import) and had a similar problem. The turbo needed a rebuild and I was told the problem came from not having a turbo timer fitted and the type of running I did a lot of- long distance at night where the turbo cooled too quickly in cold night air when the engine was turned off. It seemed to fix the problem, but cost a rebuild.
