I bought myself a Garmin Nuevi 1450T loaded with Wheris and OZtopo mapping and was very disappointed when using it on my very recent 18,000km trip from Sydney to Cape York to Brisbane to Uluru, Simpson Desert etc.

A mix of plainly wrong instructions, non-recognition of requested locations, and so on. Many times we'd be driving on a gazetted road and the display would either show nothing, or would intermittently show a road "parallel" to where it showed our car - and this was NOT because of overhanging trees etc.

If you're thinking of loading OziExplorer, which seems to be well regarded amongst EO members, double check with your supplier that you can load it into whatever GPS you buy. In my case the supplier from whom I purchased my Garmin has advised that I cannot do so.

I regret my purchase.

Google 'shonkymaps' and download a copy for your garmin. It's all above board according to the gpsoz website.
I have both oztopo and shonky (and bluechart).

Dear DB

I'm sorry to hear your mapping experience was not as you expected. This is contrary to the reports that we have back from our OZtopo customers who have travelled in this area. There are two things you must remember about OZtopo.

Firstly, it must be the only map turned on. You cannot have any other map selected (ticked) at the same time as you have OZtopo selected. This may explain the lack of detail and accuracy you have seen.

Secondly, it does not do auto-routing (turn by turn voice instructions) so asking it to go somewhere will not work. We did this deliberately as 95%+ of the customer we asked selected more detailed mapping rather than been told "turn left in 300 kms'"

If you have further questions please contact us via support@oztopo.com

regards
brian

Hi Mick
You could look at a gps unit that runs OziExplorerCE like the Hema unit.
A cheaper option could be to buy a Chinese gps unit and load OziExp CE and the maps you want.
Chinese GPS Units
You could even alter the menu system and run Tom Tom, Garmin and iGO if you wanted.
