Kangaroo Island

Is Kangaroo Island worth a trip? We wanted to take our car and camper. Is it very expensive to do this?
Thanks

yes and yes. its expensive but it worth is it. lots to see so take your time we spent 4 days there and only saw a small part of it. camping in parks was ok on price but you have to pay to get into most places of interest. over all it is a nice place you should see atlest once

Hey Murrary

I love Kangaroo Island, it is a great place to visit. America River is a great fishing spot if you interested in fishing otherwise there are an abundance of other things to see. We did once go on a tour guided adventure and it was awful. Have a look around yourself, at least you get to see things for a period of time instead of being whizzed off quickly by the tour guide.

Please note it is very expensive to travel over there. Someone once told me its the most expensive ferry for the distance traveled. I guess when you have a monopoly on the market you can charge what you want.

Not to sure about where to camp, friends had a holiday home over there, but i really liked American River, great fishing, oysters straight from the ocean some the size of your hands and just a nice place.

Obviously seal Bay is good to see seals, remarkable rocks and many of the other tourist destinations are all good to see. Really there is a heap to see and sometimes the best thing to do is drift around.

good luck

Hi Kev,

The reason the ferry is expensive is the cost involved as there is no government subsidy and so we have to pay the full amount. People who live on the Island have been lobbying for years to get the Federal Government to declare the route across Backstairs Passage an extension of the highway on the mainland for then trips back and forth would be cheaper.

This is apparently what happened with Tasmania and hence travel is cheaper - the route across Bass Strait is a National Highway.

Cheers,
Di

Hey Di,

I with you there, i didn't know about the government subsidy stuff. It pretty disgusting to think that the government doesnt promote such a great attraction and make it cheaper to trade over there.

Thanks for the info though.. i know have the whole story.

Cheers Kev

we went last year and we entirely enjoyed it. so much to see. we were in a caravan park at the other end with koala in the park and kangaroo. we were there for a week and we could have been there few more days. yes. it is a little expensive to cross but nothing for nothing these days
hope you make the trip.
Cheers

hi, we spent a week there in april with our caravan. we stayed at the american river camp ground as a base and did day trips from there. There is toilets and showers and a honour box system of 15 bucks a night. you can camp about 5 meters from the water iff you like or further away. 200 mtr walk to warf and boat ramp. magnificent place. found great camping sites wth shower and toilets at chapman creek / antechamber bay. Can camp both sides of the river and about 100 meters to sea. very nice. Also good camping at vivon bay. Iff you like fishing you can catch fish any where over there. This year they ran a special for three months, pay for you car and take the caravan for free. A weeks not long enough though my freezer had plenty of fish by then. cheers mark.

I went this time last year and stayed in cabin accommodation at American river.
Beautiful spot and as said good fishing.
A week was not long enough.
I would also avoid the holiday periods.

A must see location is on the south western corner on the Island, at Flinders Chase National Park.

Good camp grounds and one particular tourist attraction is worth the effort.
Admirals Arch is a great place, not only for the cavern underneath, but the resident colony of New Zealand Fur Seals while ensure you get a close up view even from the board walk. Much better than the guided tour at Seal Bay IMHO.
