Hello everyone again,

Well it looks like we may get to do the big lap next yr. I know there is a train of thought re clockwise and anti clockwise. So I'm just thinking which direction would be best to go after getting off the Boat from Tazzy....I was thinking about going across to Adelaide then the Nullarbor up to Perth, Karratha, Broome, Gibb and across the top and back down the coast to home Gold Coast. Any Tips would be gratefully appreciated. Looking forward to hearing your views.

Thanking you Andrea & Bruce

Hi,
Currently in Perth doing our anticlockwise lap, it will all depend on what time of year you are coming across.....you have to fit in with mother nature remember (wet season etc) also how long are you planning the trip to last this all has to be taken into consideration.
Remember to the old story about going anticlockwise....its shorter....cause your on the inside all the way around.

Depends on time of year.

EG 1st April, I would tend to go Adelaide, Perth and try and do the north during winter, then back down the East Coast during Spring.

1st January I would go the other way spending more time on the East coast..

Hiya Tony,

We are thinking that we will head straight toward Melbourne from here (Gold Coast) in late Jan do the Tazzy experience and head back to the mainland about mid March.......We would want to take all of Autumn and Winter before heading home again......

Most roads are measured on the white line so its the same distance

We did:- Feb left Brissie down east coast as far as Batemans Bay, Canberra ,Echuca, Melbourne, GOR, Adelaide, Alice in early may, on to Darwin, Kakadu then west and down the coast till November and across the Nullabor.
Never had ANY rain from Adelaide to Geraldton.

That goes with the flow so to speak and it can be busy but by booking ahead acouple of weeks we always got accomodation.

Hi Andrea and Bruce

Doing a clockwise or anticlockwise lap misses out all of the middle. Depends on the time of year you are starting out. Head north if in the winter months, or west if in the heat of summer. Just turn south when the weather gets too unpleasant in the north, and head back north when it is more comfortable, which is usually when it is wintry in the south. Lots of different routes to head north south on.

Think outside the square & do a figure 8.

We did & took 2 years to do it. Got to be well set up to cross the remote areas but seriously you will have a great trip no matter how you do it & as a bonus you will meet some great people on the road as well. Enjoy!

Head up the middle and decide when you hit the top which way to turn.

Hi Andrea & Bruce

We have done the lap both ways and would only go clockwise especially coming to Perth about March/April and than you can follow the winter all the way up to Broome(only you really don't have a winter as the weather is beautful all the way). Hope you have a great rip

SW headwinds in Spring heading down the WA coast will chew fuel as we found in 2005. This year we hit Perth late April and slowly went north trying not to catch up to the heat and humidity. And by and large we had tail winds. So at Geraldton went inland via Yalgoo and did the Miners Loop. back to Kalbarri and still 30 degrees but low humidity. Got to Port Hedland on 19th May via Steep Point, Quobba, Cape Range NP and Dampier and had temps in high 20's so quite pleasant.
But now catching up to a late burst of the wet approaching Broome which took out the GRR. So did Cape Leveque ( fantastic but humid) and back in Broome 1st June ( to High season prices) but now roads dry and Mitchell Falls open and temps under 30.
It looked like the dry had finally set in but in the first 10 days of July Broome had another 100mm of rain and GRR closed again. People have been stranded on the Ooodnadatta and Birdsville tracks this winter as it's been the wettest for decades in some cases. So with a bit of luck, 2011 will be drier. The moral of the story is that you need to be prepared for the weather to disrupt your plans... W

Don't plan to far ahead. We were heading to W.A from Adelaise and ended up in Roxby Downs after someone said we should have a look on the way through. Ended up staying 8 months. Sometimes the best places are not where you expect to find them. The weather/temp will have a lot to do with where and when.

depends on time of year if you go up the middle . . .do NT and Kimberly in Autunm winter then head down the west coast for spring wild flowers around Perth then sw WA the Nullabor and that will shoot at least six months if you are having a half decent look around.
Happy Travelling

anticlockwise - According to the Mythbusters if you keep doing left hand turns it saves a lot more fuel than Right Hand Turns :-)

So keep turning left :-)

Cheers Tony
