Google Earth Alternative

Hi All,

For those of you who find that their area in Google Earth is displayed in poor detail, try this alternative...

http://www.nearmap.com/

You'll find a much better resolution.

Cheers,

Greg..

Sorry but resolution is far worse and information is at least 6 years old.

Gidday

this has come up before. It depends where you live. It is mostly city coverage and in Perth for example it is updated on an almost monthly basis.

Whatever..

A lot of 'it' is VERY recent and sensational detail. Picks up my neighbor's rennos, barely a month old.

Great link in my book. TKS!

As the others have said, it really only covers cities. Outside of that resolution it far worse than Google Earth even in rural areas where close up pictures are not available, and the mapping is sketchy. Looking at it for my area (2004), roads are wrong, streets spelt incorrectly, and my road, which appears on most mapping including my 2003 GPS software, is not even shown.

But it has Carnarvon ... go figure ... to be fair to the original poster, where it does have coverage it is pretty good. I can see how my my lawn died over summer!

Hi Greg
Like most people, I have compared both to where I live in SA and I am afraid that Google Earth in my situation kills nearmap for resolution. Below is as good as I can get with nearmap, while Google Earth was zoomed in far closed with spot on resolution and I can even get closed to where our house is.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi

Think we have discussed this before, to some degree.
As other have pointed out detailed coverage of Nearmap is limited to certain areas (though not just cities as some have suggested). Current coverage plans here

Nearmap coverage

Areas no covered are filled in with low resolution stuff as SL has ilustrated.

You can view Nearmap within OziExplorer now which is good. You can also make calibrated images for use with OziExplorer, Garmin and Magellan GPS units (amongst others) using Mobile Atlas Creator

Works a treat

Cheers

Hi Doug

If you read through the posts you will see that what Greg meant was to say was that Nearmap has a much better resolution than GE..where Nearmap has coverage.

Most of Australia, such as your area isnt actually covered by Nearmap. They have obviously purchased some cheap low re res photos from someone to fill in the gaps. These low res air/sat photos are not actually taken by the Nearmap company.

In areas where Nearmap does have coverage it is very much better than Google Earth....no joke.

well if Luna Park in Sydney is the best I can get with nearmap compared to GE then GE is streaks ahead, the Opera House was about in my opinion 48/52 in favor of GE. If places in Sydney are below the quality of GE on Nearmap it's not much good going anywhere for a look although I will check Govt' House and the White House.

Doug

Use the best source for your area of interest. You will find both have the potential to offer the best resolution picture, depending on where you are. Just posting pictures of where GE is better is a bit misleading as it is very easy to do the same with Nearmap images....but I notice you choose not to, for some reason.

I have not compared every area in Australia but I know for a fact that in sections of SW WA Nearmap (whereit has coverage) is far better (i.e. resolution, currency) than GE . For most of WA GE is better....but that doesnt mean I should ignore Nearmaps or spend my time posting images showing GE is better.

Main aim of Gregs original post was to make others aware of another very good option for air photos.

Cheers
Greg

Thanks for posting. Much better detail for Blackwood Vic than Google Earth. Able to send lat/long location to friends overseas.

Yeah agree Nearmap is awesome. Especially in Perth, up to date images unlike Google Earth. Plus dont have to download nearmap.

From others posts it sounds patchy for resolution. For my regional area of Victoria, the map is extremely poor and years out of date compared to Google Earth.
