Planning a trip around OZ in 2012 for a year or so with my wife & 2 kids (8 & 7). Hugging the coast, love fishing and the
water, can I get some suggestions on a place which is a must stay spot during the trip. Thanks in advance.

Depends what you and your ladies like to do (apart from fishing). Your must stays will be different to
mine. To me, the real Australia is inland and centre, where there are fantastic
places to see. Particularly in WA where apart from a few key
places, the coastal route has least features of interest and has the amazing
Kimberley and scenic
Pilbara. Our five month six states/territories partial lap last year touched the coast at
Darwin, and didn't get near the sea again until the Nullarbor Cliffs.
Youngsters are usually fascinated by dinosaurs, and central north Queensland has a rich history and displays. Unless i am way of the mark with your daughter's tastes, i would include
Boulia,
Winton and
Hughenden in your tour. They would probably also like gemstone fossicking, and there are plenty of
places to do this, but again away from the coast.

Hi
Two of my favourites are
Agnes Water north of
Bundaberg and Rollingstone North of
Townsville.
I am sure you will find many more in your travels.
Good Luck.

Bedrock Caravan
Park, Mt Surprise, Queensland. Not a fishing spot, not on the coast but a great spot - great hospitality from Jo & Joe & staff.

Gotta agree re Bedrock - great place to stay - campfire singalongs and good food. Great company from the staff as
well.
Elliott Heads, out of
Bundaberg is a terrific spot - fishing, swimming, no shops (apart from two kiosks) but only about 10 minutes to
Bargara with
supermarket etc. Plenty of room at the caravan
park, good walks, good meal at the Sports Club. Funniest thing is walking on the sand towards the river - you can sink in the sand right up to your knees - my husband lost his thong in there - wathcing dogs walking and sinking is hilarious - they don't know what is happening!
Karumba on the gulf is great for fishing - can get pretty packed out though.

Heading North about from
Brisbane:- Bungle Bungle National
Park (scenic and walks),
Kununurra (fishing),
Derby Golf Course (if your a golfer) or
Derby for crabbing and trip to Horizontal
Water falls by sea plane),
El Questro (gorges and walks),
Cape Leveque (scenic and fishing), 80 Mile beach (giant salmon - mid May to mid June),
Point Samson (fishing and crabbing), Karajini National
Park( scenic and gorge walks etc). Seen them in 2006 and 2008 and will be there again next year (hopefully).
My favourites

Agnes Waters / 1770 is a good spot as mentioned above. While you are in that area Deppwater National
Park is a nice spot - on
the beach and if you time it while its not school holidays you should have the place to yourself. Also a bit further up the coast is
Red Rock. It is on
the entrance to
Byfield NP (Near
Yeppoon) on the way to 5 Rocks. If you have a 4WD you can drive up onto 9 Mile Beach for a look, but last i heard they closed down alot of the
camping areas on
the beach itself.
In WA,
Esperance is an absolutley beautiful spot. All along the South West coast of WA is apparently a good experience also - I can give you an update after christmas as we are touring that area this year.

Almost forgot the beautiful coast of
Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island. They are a most definante must stay. The kids will be able to learn a bit about the coloured sands at
Red Canyon and Fraser Island ecosystem.

Park if staying in that area ;)

Awwww...i thought they were your friends Kevin :P
In all seriousness.....steer clear of calliope caravan
park. Better off staying at the
Calliope River (Turn in at the Calliope Historical Village). A really good view and fishing in the morning and they have
toilets there now as
well.

Every time I went to Calliope Caravan
park to do an Inspection for work, the Police were there doing drug raids ;)
The long term residents have nothing better to do.
The
Calliope River is a great place to stay but be careful if swimming in the river, a
young girl got stung by a Box jellyfish earlier in the year.
Cheers Kev
