I have tried Puritabs before - hate the taste even after leaving the
water for beyond the recommended time. I saw the Biomagic stand at the Penrith
Camping & Caravan Show today, particularly their WaterPure system (
Biomagic). The rep at the stand assured me that there is no aftertaste and that it can be used for many days after sterilization. Now call me a cynic, but he would say that wouldn't he?
Has anyone tried this method, whether for the
water tank in their van, or when
bush camping? I am keen to know how
well it works with
bore water and
creek water as
well as with dodgy town
water.
What about filter systems? I was wondering about what would be recommended for
Birdsville and
Oodnadatta Tracks journeys, plus crossing the Simpson. Any advice gratefully received.

We have an active carbon
water filter for our main
tank that we fill with town
water.
You should never use
creek water for drinking, only for washing and with some caution.
Bore water is OK except for salinity and taste at some.
For drinking we carry spring
water bought from a
supermarket in 10Lt containers, the advantage of this is if one gets contaminated the others wont plus you don't have any more then 10Lts opened at a time.
Most people will only drink 1.5 to 2Lts of
water a day max (5 to 10 glasses) ....even in hot weather.
And don't forget beer, coffee, tea and softdrink accounts for you daily intake whilst away (health boffins what you to think otherwise).
Daily
water intakes are usually exaggerated and you should only drink when thirsty.....that way your not expelling good
water when you should be saving it.

James,
Products such as this involve (hydrogen) peroxide sterilisation and silver ions as a residual agent from what little information i can see. The silver ions will normally protect the
water from bacteria/algae etc reforming to a large quantity to be nasty.
It should be helpful in some
bore water depending on composition as the oxidisation assists with iron and hydrogen sulphide removal.
As to the effectiveness of this product, it mainly comes down to a manual dosing process. For large amounts of
water usage from suspect sources, i would personally back up any process with a second, possibly automatic, stage eg, microfiltration, chlorination, UV, etc
Hope that helps,
Andrew

Hi James
We have so far always been able to carry enough
water for fresh
drinking water. Meanwhile we use available
water sources direct from a bucket and according to suitability for bathing and washing up, cooking, and/or cups of tea to preserve our drinking supplies. This saves carrying filtration systems or getting caught with bad
water in the tanks. I would prefer to drink boiled
water rather than
water with chemical sterilisers added. Touring Europe in a camper with my family in the 1960s, we boiled all
water before drinking, and none of the family got ill.

Thanks guys, you have confirmed my thoughts. Boiling
water for personal consumption still seems to be the go.

Boiling only gets rid of some of the bugs and can concentrate chemical contents.
Everyday green or red cordial mixed stronger then normal will kill bugs as
well.

I wouldn't call showering "personal consumption"

Semantics there olcoolone, but i understand what you are saying. ;)
I have never heard of the green cordial recommendation rather the antecdotal evidence that exists with red cordial. A good thread to read is the following:
