We are leaving Mount Isa today on our way to Darwin over this week and was hoping for some suggestions of where to fuel up and where not to fuel up along the way.

Thanks

Chell

Agree T/Ck is always cheaper - look around as they vary a bit

avoid Renner Springs was about $1.95 last week if I recall - Elliot was cheaper

Only a short detour.. About 25Ks if memory serves. Last time I was up that way the price difference made it worthwhile, not to mention the poor attitude of the staff and very limited range of food etc. TC was much better.

Things may have improved in the last couple of years, but by all accounts I don't think so.

What goes down has to go up...so it's 22Klms X 2 = 44.

Yeah Doug, I DO realise that! Based on personal experience I still think it's a worthwhile detour.

Hi Clint & Chell
Also avoid Elliot it was $1.77 a ltr for diesel last week. You are not going to get it any cheaper than Mt Isa $1.26 at Woolies and we had a 15c docket with my 2 choclate bars I paid just over the dollar a ltr for 150litres, bonus but than came the head winds across the Barkly. You win some you lose some.
Cheers

Fill all tanks and gerrys in Mt Isa. Cheapest fuel you will see for a while. Fill in Camooweal ( will seem expensive - till you get up the road). Barlkey Homestead is expensive.Cape Crawford is expensive. Highway Inn (Daly Waters) is expensive. In short, everything is pretty expensive till you get to Katherine. Plan the trip to buy only what is essential between Camooweal andKatherine.

We now live at King Ash Bay (outside Borroloola) and fortunately (subject to head wind), can get from here to Camooweal without top up - put about 30 litres in there and we get to Mt Isa.

Borroloola is further from major centres than many of the highway places, but their fuel is cheaper - go figure. I think many of the remote highway fuel places work on the basis that (within reason) no matter what they charge, people will only fill if they need fuel and if they need fuel, they will pay a higher price -- and they are probably right in most cases.

Yep, avoid all those places and watch them slowly close down and die out.

I never grizzle at the price of fuel in remote areas. It's part of the trip and I feel it would be a lot harder if these places ceased to exist.

HTFU ;-)

Cheers,

Mark

I hardly call 24ks from Tenneant Creek remote. Definitely not enough to justify a nearly 20% increase in fuel costs. He's simply profiteering from his location at the end of the Barkly as most people need fuel by then.
I don't mind paying extra for fuel when it's justified but this place is on the main highway and it cost no more for him to get fuel than anyone in TC.

As I said he's a rip-off and he deserves to go out of business IMO.
