I'm planning a trip for February and will be travelling with a caravan from
Bega to
Oberon via
Goulburn. Can anyone who has travelled Abercrombie Road from
Goulburn to
Oberon give me an idea of the road condition? In particular, suitability for towing a van.

I came over that road early last year. The surface is very good. However, there is a very steep climb out of the Abercrombie River. After having done the
Bloomfield Track, N Qld., recently I rate it as steep.
I was towing a
Kimberley Karavan and almost struggled up to the top. Apparently, stop transports avoid it even empty!
I think there is another road to the west that is not so steep but I haven't been on it for years.
Have fun
DW

If you travel to
Oberon via Taralga(nice little village, good coffee on right as you are leaving town going north) its bitumen all the way but you still have a steep descent to the river and a much steeper climb out the other side. I think the Abercrombie road via
Crookwell still has some dirt.
We have travelled to and from
Oberon, via Taralga, three times this year and its OK for our V6 and 17' poptop but grunt is good climbing up from the river.

We've got a 2L 4cyl Hyundai and a 12' poptop. It sounds like we should go up along the coast and on to
Oberon from the Great Western Highway. What is the road from
Oberon to the Great Western Highway like?

The
hill is not a big problem unless your in a very big hurry.
Can't believe the problems some people have with driving.
The
Tuena pub is a must do in a life time and the Abercrombie river is a nice stop.

As said, a little steep in one spot, but not a problem at all..a fairly easy road and nice scenery as
well..

From
Oberon to GWH is fine, but a bit up and down hills, no real worries though.
Your van and Hyundai seem an appropriate match and if you are OK with the Brown mtn, or the Clyde, the road to
Oberon via Taralga should be OK, the climb up from the river is nowhere near as long as either of those two mtns, just dont try to do it in top gear LOL.
cheers

The road is fine. There are a few logging trucks between
Oberon and the Mt Werong turnoff (south of
Black Springs). The road is used by heavy vehicles and you should have no problem with a caravan. Keep an ear out for trucks on UHF Channel 40 on the way down the steep section (
well signposted).

I live at Faulconbridge in the Blue Mountains. I've driven and ridden this road many times. The road out of the abercrombie river is steep but it is sealed and there is a steep section half way up but nothing that a low range gearbox can't handle.Be brave and give it a go. You'll feel good when you get to the top. I rode my BMW motorbike up it years ago in the bleep in' rain before it was sealed.

Stuart, how would you compare it to coming up the GWH from
Lithgow to
Katoomba. I towed my van up there last year, and never again, but maybe the never ending stretches of road/rail works had something to do with it.
Fred.

What's wrong with the GWH between
Lithgow and
Katoomba? It's great now compared to what it was like years ago with one lane each way on Lett River
hill and Mt Victoria.
Anyone else remember the "40 Bends" section out of
Lithgow?
Bruce
