Hi All,
We are heading from Charters Towers to
Cooktown in a couple of weeks and was wondering what would be the quickest way. Is it quicker to head up the
Gregory Development Road or go through
Townsville and head up the coast road?
We just want to get to
Cooktown, and not so much interested in looking at the sights in between.
Has anyone got any reports of the
Gregory Development Road condition such as roadworks etc?
Thanks in advance
Paul.

There is a lot of road work on the
Gregory Development Road from
Greenvale to Mt Garnet. But drive steady and it is good
Have your radio tuned to ch 40 as the road trains will tell you which narrow section they are about to cross they are all numbered. PLUS you have to get right off the road when a road train is approaching, slow right down and indicate that you are pulling over. They will appreciate it and will let you know if there is another road train behind them.
We traveled over up to
Mareeba and it is
well worth the drive and then from
Mareeba to
Cooktown it is OK. As a North Queenslander and a caravan owner I prefer it to the GOAT TRACK called the Bruce Highway (
Townsville to
Cairns)
Stay safe
