I am new to this
forum, but was hoping for some suggestions. I am going up to
Darwin for 10 days with my 19 and 11yo sons. The are into
camping, fishing, 4wd ing etc. We are hiring a Britx troopy with all
camping gear supplied. We had thought of going down to Gibbs River Road, then coming back up through Kimberleys region. Can you give us some suggested
places and activities that you think would make a great holiday.
thanks in advance, Trevor

Hi Trevor
We live in
Darwin so may be able to help. Firstly, forget the Gibb way too far to drive in the time you have especially given that there are a thousand
places to see much closer. Before I even go into where to travel when do you intend to be here.
Cheers Lyndon

One more question, where do you intend to sleep with the three of you?

Yep. Done the Gibb & I agree its way to far. Unless you just want to drive a marathon & see little.
I have to say that my wife & I spent a whole 2 weeks just in
Kakadu NP when we were up that way. We are keen walkers & 4WDers & we never ran out of things to see & do while in
Kakadu NP. Best & quietest
camp sites in the
park are the low key ones.

Katherine George in Nitmiluk N P &
Litchfield N P would also be on my to do list
You could do
the loop through
Kakadu - Down to Kathreine George then back through
Litchfield doable in 10 days and at least you will have time to look at the place
I agree
Gibb River road 10 days is not long enough

Lyndon, thanks for responding. We are getting into
Darwin on Friday night. We pick up the 4wd on Saturday morning. We leave the Sunday 10th. I had a feeling that
Gibb River was going to be a long drive. Look forward to hearing your suggestions. Thanks in advance.

And we intend to sleep with 2 in the troopie, and one in a swag. I think they supply a small tent also. Apparently it is kitted out for 3 to
camp and travel.
regards,
Trevor.

Hi Trevor,
If your talking about the 10th of next month, I would make sure I buy a large tent with noseeum mesh. The mozzies at the moment are really bad. I find the oztrail dome tents great. Get a big one for the 3 of you as it it going to be too hot in the back of the troopy for sleeping. Wouldn't take that long to get to the kimberleys. if you do the GRR, Jacks
water hole is a good spot to fish for barra of the rocks. walk downstream (east) and you will hear the small
water fall.
Have Fun, Tony.

Hi Trevor
You have chosen a good vehicle option, it will be a bit of a squeeze in the front but no probs. Check all items that are meant to be in the car, not unusual for some of them to be missing, these could be as simple as a knife or chair missing, easily sorted when picking up not so easy in the bush. The battery in the car will run the fridge for one night only before the car will need to be driven, probably not an issue as you will be on the move. Where are you flying from? Expect to be very hot and sticky whilst trying to sleep, the build up started about a month ago.
I would highly recommend
Litchfield Park, what time do you get here Friday? Just thinking you could go to
Litchfield and
camp that night? It would be about and 1 ½ hr drive. Next I would the suggest
Kakadu, you could go to
Katherine Gorge first but you really need 2 or three days there which would cut your time short in
Kakadu. I would probably give
Katherine a miss and go from
Litchfield. To see
Litchfield you need 2 days not 1, there are quite a few beautiful spots that many people seem to miss, same with
Kakadu.
Please feel free to give us a call, preferably before you arrive and we can disuse some options, so many people miss the best parts or choose to
camp in the worst because they don’t know any different.
Cheers
Lyndon & Bernadette

Hi Trevor,
I went up to
Darwin for 10 days in June/July & hired a "Backpacker" Troopy in
Darwin. There was only 2 of us, but it was aimed at accommodating 3 adults. came with everything we needed - bedding, cutlery, fridge. cookware, towels etc... Was the cheapest I could find, but service was superb & the vehicle spot on.
Just check your hire agreement with Britz if you do plan to do the
Gibb River Road as I know that it is an exclusion on a lot of rental vehicles. 4WD or not, many of the rental companies will not let you take the vehicle on the
Gibb River Road.
We picked up in
Darwin, drove out to
Kakadu, spent 3 days there
camping in the National
Park - saw Nourlangie, Ubirr, Jumping Croc Cruise, Maguk, Gunlom & Yellow
Water. Headed down to
Katherine & stayed at Nitmiluk - did a chopper flight & boat cruise over
the Gorge. Then up through
Edith Falls, Douglas Daly Hot Springs & up into
Litchfield N.P where we camped for 3 nights before heading back into
Darwin.
Was a great trip & we did it comfortably in 10 days. It was myself & 7 year old daughter - a great experience for her as
well.
Happy travels & I'm jealous!!
Cheers,

hi i strongly suggest in investing in a fan that can run on batteries or off the car the build up is here early and it will make it a lot easier to sleep at night.
litchfield is a great one day trip, allow a minimum of four days for
kakadu the chopper flights over
katherine gorge are great,
mataranka is a good overnighter. have a great trip
