Ford Ranger feedback.

My son inlaw is seriously looking at a Ford Ranger dual cab 4wd 3l diesel. Are there any issues with these? I guess that includes the Mazda clone. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks Mike.

There sure are issues with them. We have one in our SES unit and it neede a new clutch after 4000 kms, new heavier duty leaf springs to carry only the rated load and a revised tailshaft centre bearing carrier to eliminated driveline shudder.
The engine has been ok though.
Save up the extra $$$ and buy a Hilux!!

Hopefully when the Australian-designed next generation Ranger hits the streets next year all of those issues will be sorted.

There are some SES units up my way that have them and they seem to perform well. The Councils are also purchasing them which is not a decision made easily.

Thanks for the headsup on your Unit's problems Ian....will keep an eye out for similiar issues, though it may have been a one off, touch wood. :)

The NSW Police have banned them from doing more than the speed limit as 9 have had a little lay down on the side of the road.

Yeah those are all normal teething problems with a brand new vehcile release though. They are easily fixed and have updated parts. The tailshaft just needs to have a spacer fitted, its not a centre bearing replacement.

Excellent cars, outrun the Hilux in all aspects and im not being biased. Im a Toyota man, but couldnt justify paying so much for a Hilux. I got a brand new top of the line BT50 for cheaper then a 2nd hand Hilux. Plus the BT has more balls, can carry heavier loads, tow heavier loads, the list goes on.

Match the specs side by side and then tell me there is a $18,000 difference. Sorry but Toyota have priced themselves out of the market. I see most of the mines in the Pilbara are starting to use the Rangers now.

Gidday Mike

I have had a Ranger for 30,000 km and nothing has broken or fallen off. It is used as a daily driver and a weekend/holiday camping vehicle (not extreme tracks or super heavy loads) and seems well suited to the task. Its performance is on a par with other utes and it is as comfortable as a lef sprung 4WD can be. Only thing about the Ford/Mazda twins is that they are the oldest of these types of vehicles and the interior is a bit spartan. Their newer rivals have a few more bells and whistles (and higher prices to match). There is a new model due to be unveiled at the Sydney Motor Show and in the dealerships some time next year.

Cheers

I have had a Ranger for close on 3 years and done 65000Kms without any problems. About 25% of the Kms have been done towing an approx. 1800Kg offroad caravan. It is a great tow vehicle.

I have just returned from a 11000Km trip with van behind and it didn't miss a beat. A friend with a top of the range Hilux was with us for the first 2500Kms (no van behind) and the Ranger performed equally as well. His all up cost with extras was close to $20000 more than my basic 4x4 extended cab trayback Ranger.

I also towed my son's 6.5m boat (2500Kgs) some 2500Kms last year and was amazed at how well it performed.

I had 2 Hiluxs prior to this and looked at both before buying. Price was a major decider but the suicide doors also swayed me and I prefered the way it felt to drive.

We have had a Ranger for 3 years 55000 Km, never mist a beat, we love it.

It's used for work, and driven by different people, and is still as smooth as the day I picked it up.

All brands can have their problems, and the way it is treated and serviced has a lot to do with every car,

Hilux, Navara, Triton all have their good sides and low sides, none are better they are just different.

Cheers

We have nearly done 100,000kms in our Ranger with no issues. It is driven daily to work in the city.
Towed our campertrailer to Longreach 8000km trip and some dirt rough roads.
Last year we travelled to Perth (10,000kms) towing our campertrailer .
This year we travelled towing a caravan to NT 12,000kms and used some dirt and rough roads and it went like a dream. It has been serviced when required and never had any problems. Would highly recommend a Ranger
Thanks Julie

hi michael p
despite some owners having a trouble free runs my friend who has a 2009 ranger and done only 42000km's and is experiencing problems towing a 1.5 tonne work trailer on a daily basis
and finds it difficult to take off from standing start without it stalling he says he has stalled it too many times to remember in traffic at intersections

i drove it last weekend and found the same the clutch seems to take up the moment peddle leaves the floor
i checked the clutch free travel and it was correctly adjusted it seems to me that first gear ratio is way too high and would be better if it had a 6 speed trans with the 6 being a lower 1st
thread number 81247 has a lot of imfo relating to clutch shudder and tailshaft issues and also reveals that ford/ mazda are aware of the problems by way of mods supplied
and yet another friend has a 2008 mazda bt 50and done 35000km's and hasnt noticed any problems yet?
i'm not trying to bag the vehicles just answering your question
re- are there any issues
cheers

hi
i have noticed that most of the owners in this thread have vehicles that are 3 yrs old its mainly the 2009/10 models that are having problems

i've been told that the later was given different drive ratios to the 2007/08 vehicles to get a better fuel consumption which has been achieved to the detriment on other issues
so hopefully the new model coming soon will have no issues as its apparent the the makers have acknowleged this by reading th 81247
cheers

Hi there,

We have a 2010 Mazda BT-50. We're just about to hit 10,000km next week and have had no issues whatsoever with our truck.

We also went the dual cab option and we're loving every minute of it so far. We regularly tow our camper trailer, and although it isn't a large trailer we are happy with the way it tows and the economy when towing! We have friends with a 2009 BT-50 who are just returning from a 5 week central Australia trip, and they've also had a great run with their truck so far.

We really couldn't justify the extra cost of upgrading to a Hilux. If money was no object we probably would have considered it, but seeing as though money is one of the main considerations we carefully weighed up our options and what we thought would provide the best value and suitability for us.

I hope this helps make your decision easier.

Cheers,
Kaz
