You would want to check with HEMA re the current map offering, but when we bought ours 2? years ago it came with the complete 1:250 000 Australian Topo's, and the complete HEMA Maps set plus a couple of others.

Hi Mick
If you are looking for an all in 1, simple unit to use, then you can not go past the HN5. They come with all the latest maps available both in the Hema Range and the Natmap series 1:250,000 topo maps. I mainly use mine in the Ozi mode and you can track and log your trip route, just as if using a laptop for the same reason.

Sure they are not the cheapest unit on the market, but at least you do not have to add anything, just mount it in your vehicle, power it up and you are ready to go.

Cheers

Hi Mick
The units are very easy to use, but having said that I have been using Ozi on Laptops for years. The Hema Navigator 5" is as easy as :

Press the power button on and when you come to the main screen, you have the choice of 3 systems to use Route 66, Ozi Explorer and Memory Map. Which ever one you decide to use, just tap the screen and away you go.

In Ozi mode, the main mode that I use, you can import track and waypoint files, just as you do with you laptop. The greatest bonus is that if you want to use the unit away from your vehicle, have still have all the features and benefits of Ozi but small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. If you go to the links below, it explains how to do these tasks in Ozi mode, direct from the OziExplorer web site and Hema.

The Hema Navigator is superb for Australian wide coverage using the range of maps provided and used by OziExplorer for Moving Map display of where you are at any given time.
Hema comes with Natmap 2008 digital maps covering the whole of Australia and also includes detailed maps such as the Hema Great Desert Map series.

The Hema also has a voice guided city navigation system called Route 66, but this is a clunky and non-user friendly navigation tool. It sort of works, but Tomtom, Garmin and Navman units offer better solutions for city navigation.

Don't let Route 66 deter you from considering the Hema Navigator for it's major strength in moving map navigation, track recording and the ability to record and save waypoints along the trip. There is no better system for outback/country touring in my opinion.
Add to this a good sized screen display (5") that gives an excellent compromise between being large enough to view the display and small enough to be relatively inconspicuous.

Mick,

The VMS unit is possibly cheaper but offers essentually the same facilities.

The problem is, you need to purchase the VMS unit, OzExplorer, NATMAP Premium 2008 digital maps and Hema digital Map series separately, install them and get them to work properly.

The Hema already includes all of this and is ready to go out of the box.

Has anyone had a look at the Navman my75t?

This device retails for about $400 (will probably be cheaper at Christmas), and is supposed to come preloaded with "Hema 4WD tracks". There is a list of most of the well known Australian touring tracks.

My local JB store has some on back order, but couldn't tell me if the full Hema map base could be loaded.

Has anyone had any experience with this unit?

Hi George
We have had a few in at work, but did not get the chance to have a play with one. One of the other chaps did and said that you can add the Hema maps to the units, but they do not come loaded and you have to go out and buy the Hema Maps.

Cheers

Mick, we bought a navman last year because we were sick of getting lost in the city and big towns, no good past that. We bought the Hema and its great. But crap in the city with the 66. We used both on our last trip. The Hema battery lasted from about 9 in the morning and ran out about 2.30 that afternoon. Its hema maps are more detailed than our hema book. Oh don't go away with out the manual.

Hi Mick,

I am planning on loading some Flinders tracks downloaded from exploreoz into my HN5 tonight for use over the weekend.

This will be the first time I have used Oziexplorer (I also bought the PC licence last week so I can use it on a big screen too) so I will let you know how I go.

It came with all the 250k topo maps and all of Hemas touring maps. One cool thing is how you can flip through the maps for the area you are looking at on screen with just the press of a button. I think for the Flinders there are 3 or 4 to scroll through so you can just pick the one with the appropriate level of detail you need.

I used Route 66 when I visited Italy last month and was very happy with that app.

Cheers

Quick summary,

It was very easy to use. I didn't use much of the functionality in Ozi (there are alot of buttons I didn't press) but if you just want to load a map or track file and see where you are then it is very simple to use.

I am very happy with it.

Cheers

Alex
