Howdy All,
Looking for a
camping spot for a weekend away with my wife and children, and the family of a friend (also with kids). We are after somewhere where the kids can run around in a nice open area and play, and can paddle around in a river. We also want to do a bit of 4WD'ing.
I know some good spots between
Lithgow and
Mudgee (Newnes, Turon etc) but that is 4 hours travel for my friend in
Newcastle. I know some good spots around
Barrington Tops, but that's 4 hours for me (
Sydney).
Does anyone know any good family
camping spots with a river, some grassy areas and some 4WD'ing that is reasonably accessible from both
Sydney and
Newcastle for a weekend? I am under the impression that there isn't too much in the way of river play for the kids in the Watagans.
Thanks for any help
Cheers
Bear

Theres Munmorah National
park, good
camping spots with
toilets, Beach and some form of
creek that flows in to the sea after heavy rains. Fees apply but no 4wd tracks. It's about mid way between Gosford and
Newcastle.
Google map it and see what you think.

Clarencetown......approx 1 1/2 hrs from the start of the F3 (
Sydney end ).....fires, showers, swimming, fishing ( even waterskiing downstream a bit ) , dog friendly ( on a leash ) and plenty of 4wding close by...
Will be booked out this long weekend, but normally very easy to get in..
Don't know of anywhere closer to
Sydney ??

How about lake St. Clair in
Singleton, don't know what 4WDing there is around there, but great spot for kids.

If you can handle going just a bit further north check out Treachery
Camp at Seal Rocks, one of my most favorite spots in Australia.
Haven't been in NSW for 5 years so it may have changed, about 45 mins north of
Newcastle if I remember correctly.

Thanks for a collection of great ideas everyone. I am heading out on 30/31 October so I don't need to worry about long weekend crowds. Also have a bit of time to do google research on the
places you have suggested and share with my mate also.
Being in NW
Sydney and close to both Bells line of road and the F3 it's not too far for me for all of those
places (Upper Colo is particularly close).
Cheers
