Can anybody help me, I need to add some gas struts to my old Trakshak trailer as per the newer models and can not find any info on the specifications of the struts.
Reading an earlier thread people have advised that 700n is the pressure required however when i contacted a firm here in australia they suggested that this would not be strong enough.
If anybody out there has a Trakshak and could let me know if there is any specifications on the struts or who knows what they are I would be most grateful.

Could you ask Trakshak manufacturers what the specs are for the struts?

If your in
Sydney I have made a bracket to help remove your existing struts and install the new or I can provide a drawing with measurements for you to make a bracket you will need a welder and a few nuts.
Let me know if I can help
Cheers Michael

My 1999 model has 960n struts on it which I have recently replaced. I went out to trak shak to get some new ones which they said they had over the phone but when they saw my ones they were smaller than what they use now but after searching around in some boxes they got from the old factory they found a pair the same. The newer ones use a bigger strut which is around 1200n I think. So 700n will probbaly not be enough. And as the other person said you will need a jig to put them on as the new ones are impossible to compress without some sort of mechanical device. I made up a device out of 50mm angle with a nut welded on it and threaded rod which you can wind in with a spanner to compress the strut to the correct length to fit it.

Thanks for the reply looks like 1200n is the go although I dont have a boat rack so maybe 1000n will do.

I have replaced my struts a couple of years back, and luckily for you I can still read the Nunbers
Boat rack struts......TYF 16-6 016 12252 1200n 2707
Main opening struts.....555975 1150n 350DS
I purchased these from BJ Bearings, and they were sourced from "Struts Australia".
Stabilis are another mob, but they are a lot more expensive, and lets face it they get hammered anyway.
The key is the 1200n.. and the 1150n... but it may pay to remove the old struts so the guy's ordering them can measure shaft sizes ect.
To remove the old struts, and to replace the new ones, I use a tongue and groove floor clamp, I permanently borrowed from a "chippy" mate of
mine.....The clamp is at least 1.5 mt long, fully adjustable and very solid construction.... Saves a lot of grief..!
I was chatting to the Trak Shak blokes at
Melbourne's Leisurefest, last weekend, about the power of the new struts, and how they easily lift open the boat rack, even with tyres ect up on the rack.
I asked then what power in Newton -meters they were, so I could fit them.
They advised strongly against me doing it to our older style Trak Shak, as it would simply twist the main support to the body of the camper itself. You see the new ones have been re-enforced, where the strut attatches.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Bucky

great idea using a sash cramp to compress this i have, I intend to internally reinforce where the brackets go so structure should be ok.
