I know that people come and go on internet Forums (Fora?) but some who seem to make a decent contribution get noticed by their absence.

I haven't seen Kim and Damn Dog recently and can't see him on the Victorian members list (I'm sure he was from Victoria).

I hope all is well with him and he just moved elsewhere.

If anyone has contact please pass on my good wishes.

Hi Gone Bush,

I know that there were a couple of members that were banned for LIFE, including Willem and Richard Kovac. Why they were banned only the powers of be will know.

Sure we do not all agree with some of the statements and comments that are made on the forum, but as they say that is life and we have to get on with it and it makes great talking points.

Bring back the old members and lets us add more spice and great debates back to the forum.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers

Based on several "chats" I had with some people on this forum I think the reason that some get banned (or chastised at least) is more to do with their method of expressing their opinion than the opinion itself. Basically they have “disappeared” because they were just too damn rude and arrogant – the sort of attitude that would get you a guaranteed punch in the face in any pub.

Cheers

People come and go as their interests and pastimes change. I personally know a number of people who no longer post here. They've just moved onto another stage in their life.

Some have, for example, moved from 4wding and camping, to yachting.

As for bannings, that is much overstated. Those who have been banned, and there are few, were given numerous and fair warnings. Ultimately they made the choice themselves to leave.

Jim.

The other sort of reply I am not seeing is the response from the advertisers. Solar panel - 12 volt electrical advice was readily available from a few people, but not now. Same for other topics.

I did see some responses removed due to breaches of the advertising rules. Maybe that's why no assistance now?

It is very difficult to answer questions about Solar gear - When the instruction from management and mods is such that you cannot say anything about the goods you sell !!
I was forever being warned by mods for self-advertising and this response will probably go the same way .. And yet others seem to get away with comments like - "SEND ME A PM and i'LL GIVE YOU A PRICE !"

Consequently I only pop in now and then and post very little ....

Steve,

As has been explained to you and numerous other Business Members, you are free to discuss products that you sell.

Direct links to your web site and stating product prices etc is where the Self Promotion issue occurs.

As Michelle has explained, Business members need to direct potential customers to your Member Profile in order for ExplorOz to create statistical data on how effective your Business Membership is. By allowing you to post links directly to your website etc therefore removes any such referral data from being gained.

We (the Modsquad) are not here to read each and every thread and police the content. It is up to the users of this site to use the Mod Alert feature to alert us to any misuse of the Forum. We will then look into the possible misuse and take action if needed, not all alerts require action (but we do continue to monitor the alerted thread).

Regards
The ModSquad

I've been a business member here for some years and find the results to be outstanding.

The balance between blatant self promtion and getting the most from being a business member is a fine line. I try to offer advice, whilst also being objective. For example I would never bag Black Widow or Outback, how could I, they make an outstanding product. I am however, always confident in stating the relevant quality and value of my product and the choice I offer prospective customers.

Michelle is only a phone call away and has always guided me. This is something I have not to pursue for a long time as I worked it out with her.

My only disappointment is that I had to curtail my general contribution to the forum as I was getting abuse from a small element suggesting I was doing so for self promotion.

This is a fine forum, both for general information and business promotion.

Jim Best.

i do find the comments of other "business members" interesting ....... i find it hard to post any form of relevant information to genuinely assist travellers in there travels and i was hoping that is what this site was about, i now find that if i want something important posted that will genuinely affect the plans and travels of a tourist i have to post it on another site and it get re-posted on to this site without a problem, have no idea why but that is fine as i simply don't want others to get stuck due to poor information or the lack of it ......
I does seem to be "drifting" into an "exclusive" form of a club that is willing to offer information to those that are perceived to be of short term financial value and no regard is given to the value it may be long term, yes i am aware it is in itself a business and needs to make money and that is itself very hard to do these days but the way i look at it is that it could be the "f@cebook" of travellers if done so correctly and would be of far more and wider value than it is at present ................
I know most of the "internal" will disagree but look at it this way, i could sell cheap fuel and advertise it .... and charge a fee to drive up to the bowser ...
I could charge for people to use the toilets or have coin operated taps on the sink ....... or could go to what has been suggested.... charge a "non local" fee so if you are a tourist you will pay a % more .... or simply put up a sign out the front advising tourists not to call in as we dont make any money from you .....
This is not any form of personal attack but a suggestion that it may not be working as well as it could from my end as a "visitor" to the site, i get many face to face comments from travellers asking why they cant get info on us and i have told many it is not without us trying to get it out, we still push EO as hard as we can and sat many down showing them the likes of the "Landy's" blogs that are fantastic .......
Just my point guys, i think if the blinkers were let just a tad wider you would be very suprised, it is needed, we wont make a cent more and dont want to but you have the possibility to..

I am not a business member, but to me the most powerful form of advertising on this forum is not 'self promotion' but when you start to see heaps of recommendations for the services and products of business members coming from regular forum users. Jim and Derek certainly fit that category and, from what I have seen, Mandrake is starting to build up that following as well.

Only you guys know whether advertising on this site works for your business, but it seems to me that if you focus on good service/products/price, then the recommendations will come in time.

I have bought stuff from Derek before and always been impressed with the service. Would be happy to do business with Jim or Mandrake in the future; not because of their own promotion, but because other members seem to be very happy with what they have to offer.

Recommendations from other punters (reputation) much more important to me than any self-promotion I think.

Cheers,

Matt.

Joe n Mel - the issue you describe is covered by our service regardless of whether you are a visitor, member or business member. If you have genuine trip planning information that our audiences should know about then you have a couple of choices:
1. enter the information yourself directly into the relevant sections of the site - eg. Trek Notes, Road Conditions, Places.
2. provide the information to our site editors to make changes to the published content in Trek Notes or Region Overview articles.

However, posting information in the Forum about your specific business operation - such as fuel availability and hours of opening is not suitable for the Forum - but you as a business member you would gain a profile page on ExplorOz for your business, which you can update 24/7 with your particulars such as this. As a Business Member, you would also be able to write blogs like the Personal Members do. I know that your Account Rep, Kerry Wynn has previously discussed this with you and has provided you with a proposal so I have asked him to contact you again to followup on this.

If you wish to discuss this or any other matters further, I am happy to do so via direct email or a phone chat.
