Info needed about Hema 5

Hope someone can help me . Just wondering with the Hema 5 ,Do you have to turn it off before starting/stopping engine of car or just leave it on ???? Ive owned Nav systems for my car before .The first one could stay connected all the time ( It got pinched) and the second one just stopped working and after reading the instructions realised you had to disconnect the unit ..Cant find anything in the Hema book ??

Cheers Hilary

Hi Hilary,

If the Hema5 is supplied with 12 volts from say the cigar plug and the cigar plug is fed from the ignition circuit (usual) then when you turn-off the car the Hema will continue to operate from its internal battery until that goes flat. So it is best to turn the Hema off when stopping the engine. (Hold down the Hema button until the screen goes blank)

If however you are only shutting the engine down for a short time (say less than a couple of hours) then it is sufficient to simply put the Hema into "Sleep Mode" by pressing the button for one second and it will display that is going into Sleep Mode before going blank. When ready to resume just press the button briefly and the Hema will resume to the screen that was last displayed. Saves going through all the boot-up procedure.

Hi Hilary,

As Alan has stated, there is a sleep mode on the Hema and when you turn the external 12 volt supply off the Hema will continue to operate uninterrupted from its internal battey.

I don't bother putting it in sleep mode if stopping for an hour or so. The internal battery should operate for around 4 hours when relatively new.

Reminds me of a task I have just completed on my Tomtom. The battery would not hold a charge for very long at all. The unit is approximately 3yo and the battery has just "died".
I ordered a replacement battery online from Battery Shack in QLD and have recently replaced the old battery with a new one. Not simply an unplug and plugin but the job turned out to be pretty painless and now Tomtom is as good as new.

Going to be interesting in 2-3 years when the Hema needs a battery transplant.

Hi Hilary,

If you have a dual battery set up, You could run a cigarette outlet from it into the cab and run your Hema off it.

Not so much worried about running out of power but more the effect starting the car might have (power surges etc) ..

Hilary, Do not be concerned about "power surges etc".
So called power surges are an invention of people who want to sell you protective devices for something that may just happen if lightning hits your power line. It sure ain't going to happen to the navigator in your car. If its plugged in and turned on then go ahead and start your car with the confidence of peace. Or turn your ignition off whilst the navigator is still on for that matter. Trust me, but I can't show my face because I'm a dentist or professional engineer or something. LOL

Cheers
