I have an 04 guIII with a ZD30 engine(bought before I knew of their terrible reputation) It has started to make a noise(intermittantly) I can only describe as a clatter when starting once warm. No smoke or anything, just a noise that goes away once the engine is running. Also when cold(again intermittantly), it makes the same noise(just a lot worse but wont rev up and blows black smoke)
Has anyone had or heard of this problem? The local diesel pros thought it was ERG and replaced the valve which they say was leaking but it still does it.
any help would be great.

Can i
Can i
Can i
pull the pin please SIR!!!!!
or is it push the det????
can never remeber.
sorry wacky sense of humour.
You could try a little 2 stroke of
water cooled oil in your diesel, see if that quiets it down some!!!
no more than 300 mls!
if it does its the effect of low sulphur diesel and your rig doesn't like it. Don't worry
mine doesn't like the ulsd either.
So i'm in a similar boat!
and yes you can push my det any time!!!

The Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) on those engines can affect a lot of things. Probably the first thing you should check.

Hi Simon
Is it a manual, if so it could be the dual mass flywheel, I had an earlier model which made a noise like the big ends were going to fall out. Had it checked and they replaced the flywheel and all was OK again.
Cheers

X 2 for the fly wheel , my one sounded nasty on startup espescially , quietened down slightly when revved.
Also was going down the big end road , when i got the donk out flywheel had about 6" of movement.
Safari tuff clutch and a solid fly wheel sorted it out at afraction of the price of OE Nissan !
Good Luck.

Hi Simon,
Given the reputation of the ZD 30 I would take it to someone who knew what they were doing. It could be very expensive otherwise.
Having said that, if it won't rev out when it makes the noise and blows black smoke it sounds as though it might be injectors or the pump. Don't take a chance with it, as I said mate, it could get very expensive.
Cheers, Bruce.

It would be interesting to know how many ks has it done and what sort of service history the vehicle has?.
Cheers

Thanks guys,
The car has a full service history, biggest problem up until now has been a belt tensioner. Has 214000Kms, doesn't use oil between changes. Has plenty of power, just starting to have a bit of a splutter when starting first thing on very cold mountain mornings (IE: <5deg C) but it is getting a few Kms on it which may explain that. all sensors checked ok. I had considered the DM flywheel might be causing the noise but it doesn't explain the smoke and low RPM. Its a bit of a prickle, cant do without it and don't feel right about trading it to some poor sucker.
