Hi, a couple of Canadians just about to come over for six months. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend places to pick up some gear -- tents, sleeping bags, cooking etc. in the Sydney area, which is where we'll be landing. Thanks.

Hi

For general stuff the easiest would be BCF, but not being from Sydney I am not sure where they are in Sydney, look them up on the net i'm sure you will find them.

Have a good trip

Anaconda, Aussie Disposals or BCF for a start.

there are numerous chains as mentioned above, and there are plenty of them often 2 or even 3 different chains in the one shopping area so getting the best prices shouldnt be hard or requir driving from one end to the other

if your in a hurry as mentioned BCF (boating fishing camping) is a one stop shop but their starting to corner the market so prices may be creeping up

Advise them to buy over there and bring it with them. They'll have a heart attack at our prices compared to internet camping sites in Canada & USA.

We are bringing some of our own gear with us. But don't forget, it's a lot warmer there than it is here, and much of our gear (like our sleeping bags) would be far too warm to use. Thanks to those that have listed stores, most had not shown up in my Google searches to this point.

I go to CANADA just to visit your outdoors stores, Mountain Design and a million others, you guys are spoint!

As others have said, Anaconda, BCF (Boating Camping Fishing), or Aussie disposals are a good start. You could also try Katmandu but if you ask at your accommodation I am sure they'll have the line on the best and nearest.

Have a great time visiting!

We have our very own Canadian members here on the site who have more travel experience around the wide brown land than most Aussies! Here is a link to their EO homepage,

Scott and Gaby

A wealth of information these two and good people. We keep letting them back in for some reason! Post an email address in a reply and I'm sure they'll flick you one back....eh.

Cheers Mick.

BCF (in Sydney anyway) is a complete rip off compared to Anaconda and other outdoor/camping stores.

No one has mentioned "Kangaroo Tent City". Are they an option?

Hello Dave
I had e-mailed a couple from Canada going to Australia a while back then lost their e-mail address when our computer went down. Were you the ones from Alberta asking about purchasing a caravan? If you are going into the desert then our Canadian sleeping bags will do. It does get cold out there. I have waken up to ice in my water bucket. I have made 4 trips to Australia and every time I do I bring as much stuff from Canada as I can. Our prices are a lot cheaper, even more so now since the Australia dollar is worth more. (about 1 cent). I would recommend that you fill your suitcases to the maximum. Having said that, there are some good stores (as listed by other) to buy what you need because you can't take it all with you.

If I can be of help just let me know. The Aussies you meet will bring you great memories. They are a good bunch of mates.

Yes, that was me, except we're from Sasakatchewan. Leaving here in just over a week. We are getting close to maxed out on weight right now, so we will have to purchase some stuff there. And yes, its a bummer about the dollar -- about a 20% drop in value of the $CDN since we first decided to go, which makes our budget a lot tighter.

Well David you will have a great time and meet great people. Don't forget to take a few trips off the beaten trail. We found it more comfortable to travel off the track with other people that we met. There are others out there looking to join up for some of those unique trips. Do it. It is an experience you will not forget.
Have fun
