Hi All,
we will be going to
Marree last week of November to catch the Cooper Ferry and then work our way up to
Oodnadatta. Two (maybe three) vehicles and camper-trailers, but we will be taking my 87 year old mother-in-law with us and I need some advice as to which Caravan
Park in
Marree would have the better cabin style accommodation for her. I am familiar with
William Creek and
Oodnadatta having been there in the last couple of years but have not been to
Marree for 30 years. So
Oasis or Drovers Rest and why or why not?

Just a couple of weeks ago there was a real put down post about CV parks in Maree Jeff - might be worth a search.

I think the criticism was of the management at the pub and their management of accommodation bookings.
Cheers

Yep...from me. Read this.
Marree Hotel
Please note,
Oasis Caravan
park where we stayed on a previous visit was good and so is the Drovers Rest from what I've been told.

Hi Fab,
Just as I wrote in thread 82117, it would be really useful to people on EO if ratings, comments etc about
Places was put into the
Places section of ExplorOz and this post highlights that even further. It is such a shame when people like yourself visit a place and have really great info to share to have it get lost in the big black hole of archived
forum posts when post people planning at trip will use our mapping system or look up
Places - and you can put all your comments and even ratings directly on those pages which are there for anyone in the future doing research. I notice you put it in Trip Advisor, so maybe you didn't realise we offer than same service here on EO within
Places so hope you don't mind me jumping in here to let you know about it.
Thanks Michelle

We already have a good system in
Badgers Australian Caravan Parks Reports.. This is
well established and also includes campgrounds. If we contribute to this rather than trying to add to several of these sites we will have a more complete reporting system.

While you are on a learning curve, here is a couple of others.
Garry Strattons - MyParkList. This is the most complete list of caravan parks I know of.
Oz Camps - Independent Camping - This one was developed by the bloke who set up the Caravaners
Forum, it is one that users can add to or correct.

Fab 72,
Just spotted this and he was no better while we were stuck there.
The Drovers Rest was the absolute opposite. Due to his poor customer service we did our best to pass the time by finding ways of taking up his space and not spending money in the place.
At the end day he has a booming business and can do as he wants.

Jeff
Both parks are owned by the same guy. He also owns the only store in town. The bus companies stay at the
Oasis, some of them in cabins. However, the cabins seemed pretty ordinary when we camped there earlier this year. You might investigate the possibility of a cabin for M i L at the pub. They seemed to have quite a collection of virtually new ones in the yard. Have a look at Google earth and you will see the setup. We stayed at Drovers Rest a few years ago and the cabins were VERY ordinary!!! Can't comment on them now.

Oasis not for an 87 year old, could fall through the floor of the amenities. If you are towing and have extra mirrors make sure they are welded on to your car.Our friends and our mirrors were laying on the ground in the morning [couldn't get them off]. Fellow in charge said,'Never happened before.' Yeah right.

stayed at the pub a couple of weeks ago and noticed they have quite a few cabins. Looked quite nice and clean.
Just remember to pack the mozzie spray, they are sure in abundance at the moment at
Marree.

We were in stuck in
Marree for four days over the BV races weekend due to closed roads.
We stayed at the Drovers Rest and the new management are wonderful local people.
The cabins are ok with all you need and has an adequate
camp kitchen.
Cant comment on the other one as I have never stayed there, however the DR does look a little better.

Hi Jeff, we stayed for free in our van in the compound at the pub in late June. There were probably a dozen rigs there and even a patch of lawn for the tenters. Yes there are 3 or 4 cabins there too. $2 for a shower with plenty of hot
water- it was chilly in the mornings and not a mozzie or fly in sight. You have the option to have a meal at the pub at roughly $25. It's a big return drive up to the ferry and back. We did 370km in 9 hours on the day and were glad to buy dinner.
The
water at the ferry has only dropped 0.6m at the
Cooper Creek Ferry so should be still over 3m at the crossing but down to just 0.6m at the
Birdsville Track..... W

Hi Jeff,
We stayed at the Drovers Rest at
Marree in 2007. Also opted for a cabin at that time due to rain. From memory we had a good stop there, cabin was good, clean and reasonably new from memory. There was a basic
camp kitchen as
well, and laundry. And even some grass areas for tents.
Haven't stayed at the others in
Marree, but was happy with the Drovers Rest.
Cheers, Mark.

We stayed in the cabins (two couples) at the pub last month for 1 night and they are quite new and are fine; not luxurious but fine. Also we noticed that some people were
camping in the compound that the cabins are in beside the pub so you will probably be able to stay there with camper trailers etc too. I heard that to
camp there was free. Check with the pub tho first. We were there to do a flight over Lake Eyre so we ate at the pub at night and they had a complementary breakfast for us too and the meals are good.

Just a thought, why not stay at
Lyndhurst? MUCH better, quieter, cheaper, nicer in all respects. CP is alongside pubwith a few sites, but also have rooms available I believe.
Still makes an fairly easy drive to the ferry for the day if you want to put in a full day without going through to
Birdsville.
The other thing is the road between
Lyndhurst and Maree is being sealed slowly, and the bits that are not done are billiard table smooth and very wide.

There is 25 kls with bitumen on, in 2 sections one 17kls and one 8kls
The road was fairly rutted in
places and a lot of ponded
water last month when we travelled on it due to recent rains.
Not the smooth road it was when we travelled on it in June.
Cheers,
John

We stayed at the caravan
park that is basically near the start of the
Birdsville track in August 2009.I cannot recall the name of it ATM tho.
Owned by a local company...and it was/is the nicest of the 2 parks in
Marree.
Managers were very helpfull and friendly...and were very understanding when we needed to stay longer as
Lyndhurst road was closed briefly due to rain.
Will always give this
park a heads-up.
On the other hand...we also stayed at the other one on our way out to
William creek on the same trip about a week earlier....as we were told by a fellow camper in
Broken Hill that this one was "the best CP in
Marree ...????!!!!!
What a gross overstatement that turned out to be. Dust abounded plentifully...and the amenities rocked from side to side when walked around in...they were old ...dirty..and I really couldnt see any sort of plumbing coming out of them either. We later found out that this
park , the pub, and the servo was owned by the same person or family...so I guess they didnt hafta work too hard in a place like that hey.
HTH.
Cheers Keith

Thank you one and all for your replies, I have decided for better or worse to go with the
Oasis in town, one of my wife's work mates stays there regularly and says its OK. Time will tell. I will post a report in the appropriate section when we return, Having stayed at Odnadatta and
William Creek in the last couple of years I don't have high expectations and fortunately neither does the M i L, so we should be OK. Again thank you all
