Darling River Run

Hello fellow campers. I am planning a trip from Bourke (NSW) to the Menindee Lakes. I have researched a few bush camping spots along the way, but would appreciate any feedback on camp spots on the Darling River that you may have come across in your travels.

Kind Regards

Phil

G'day Philip

I don't wish to sound rude but what's wrong with finding camp spots as you are travelling ? That's worked for me over the 40 plus years of travelling around this country and also a lot of fun ! People these days tend to plan WAY too much and WAY too far ahead leaving no room for flexibilty should there be road, weather or vehicle problems ! Some good spots along the Darling, hope you find them !

Have a great trip and Happy Travelling

Cheers

Agree with above, you can mention camping spots to other travellers till the cows come home and none will be used because of timing, only way to travel is to find your camp spot about 4ish, or if you find a good one at 10am you stay for 24 hours.
Enjoy your journey.

G'day Baz & Pud

I run a small outback four wheel drive / motorcycle tour company and my best advice to anyone travelling this country is to have as few plans as possible ! That way you are never dissappointed if something happens and you don't make your planned destination - it also causes stress amongst the other people in the group whether they are friends, family or guests. Yes, you must have some sort of plan but how many times have I and my travelling companions had a better time elsewhere because we didn't end up where we expected !

See you in the bush - and it doesn't matter where !

Cheers

We did the same route in July.
Make sure that you stay a couple of days at the Kallara station www.kallarastation.com.au/
There are great camping spots along the river, shower facilities near the homestead.
We bought a large leg of organic lamb from there for less then $ 30.
Great experience!
Menindee Lakes: there are some awesome camp spots along the lakes, FREE! or along the river for a small fee.

Enjoy; its a stunning and impressive run.

Organic lamb? Does that mean they run around in a paddock and eat grass??!!

Phil

Atached is the link to a trip we planned in July 2009.

We also stayed an extra day at Trilby and skipped the Wilga campground.

We got rained out at Menindie, so ended up in White Cliffs for a few days.

Hi Phil,
We have been doing a similar time frame to Gazz.
This is how we selected campsites.
With an outstretched arm toward the sun hold three fingers horizontal to the horizon and when the gap between the sinking sun and the horizon reaches three fingers wide start looking for a camp spot.
This time frame allows for a relaxed setup and time to wind down with maybee a beer, kids to chillout and help swambo to prepare an evening meal.
Remember if she's happy, everybody is happy
Living is a journey,it depends on where you go !

Pinko, If you put four fingers up you would have time to set up camp AND help with the evening meal. She would truly then be happy. LOL. bob.

The 3 finger rule = approx 3/4 of an hour till sunset. 15mins per finger.

I have camped at Wilga in Paroo NP right next to the river, great spot.

We also stayed at Trilby Station.
Obviously not bush camping as such, but went canoeing, yabbying and did a self drive around their property. Well worth a stop at station on the Darling.

The only other this is keep an eye out for road closures in this area.

We stayed at Trilby Station and had a great time. Ask the locals to see some of the station "sites " while you are there. Also there is free camping at Tilpa Weir which we found great. Take your time particularly approaching the Grids (depending on road conditiions) - "tram tracking" can occur
