The West Coast has some very interesting places to see.

There is a book available by Chris Boden called "4wd Tracks in Tasmania"

The Pieman River area and ferry is of particular interest, if you have time take a cruise on the Pieman River.

Every year there is incidents of tourists having accidents on gravel roads in hire vehicles, THEY THEN FIND OUT THEY ARE NOT INSURED, WHILE ON GRAVEL ROADS!

For what it is worth, upgrade to a 4wd and then check that it is also allowed on the type of road you wish to travel.

If you are planning to go into the high country, be prepared for EXTREME weather changes. Even in summer (Christmas) it can snow.

Have a great time over here and enjoy our unique state.

That book is sold on ExplorOz - see here and yes, it is absolutley the "bible" for travelling Tasmania if you want to "get away" and find the best camping spots and drive trails. All are on dirt roads, and if you don't have a 4WD you can forget quite a few of the tracks. Places like Montezuma Falls, Ring River Rd, Sandy Cape etc on the West Coast are very special and if you visit will remain life long memories. That said, Tassie is very easily travelled by 2wd just not to these sorts of places. On thing that I found very unique about Tasmania was how easy is was to find good quality bush camps - with abundant state forests to explore on easy dirt trails, through the most majestic scenery, its just eye candy for the outdoors lover. I'd suggest upgrade so you have the choice to do whatever you feel like when you get there. Best of luck.

I just got back from doing some work in the South West of Tassie & on my travels I could not help noticing some very interesting 4WD tracks going off into the forests.

I have a 4WD & 2WD & I can tell you when I go next year for a holiday I will be taking the 4WD so I can do a bit of exploration on those interesting side tracks I saw.

Brenton W

You are travelling North from Corinna to the North West, how are you getting to Corinna??

My suggestion would be to go south from Devonport to Railton, Sheffield (the town of murals, and see the glass manufacturer) head off out Claude Road to Gowrie Park, Cethana and head for Cradle Mountain for a look see.

Then across to the Murchison Highway and down to Tullah, Rosebery and Zeehan, then up to Corinna, North to Marrawah and back along the Coast to Devonport and the boat.

There are lots of places the ones mentioned, and plenty of camping spots, BUT in ten days don't like your chances of seeing the lot.

Cheers and enjoy your trip.
