Ducked into Supercheap the other day for some battery post connecters but noticed they were $4.95 each. Thought this was a bit expensive and took myself to a battery specialist. There they are just $4.00. Almost 25% difference.

While in Supercheap I did notice that 20l Castrol GTX diesel was just $89. This I thought was a great price reduction from the normal $121.00. Not certain how long this price continues.

So now I vow to look more closely at the prices.

Gee Wizz Carl,

What a saving. How many did you buy?....Two?
Thats a saving of $1.90.

I compare prices, but will happily pay a bit more if the dearer item was from a more convenient location.

I guess the point is that Carl is just alerting us EO bods to the fact that Super Cheap is just a name & maybe not all their products are cheaper than other similar outlets & therfore the 25% saving might also be applicable to more expensive items & well worth shopping around.

I agree that shopping around & comparing prices is the best bet like you do so that you don't get ripped off like so many of us do at times.

Cheers & happy travelling

While I agree with shopping around, be careful of the trap you can fall into here. Fuel and time. How many people have driven around comparing products and prices, only to go back to the first shop they went to. Ever worked out how much fuel was used? While it is possible to save big, how often have you heard people leaving one shop, driving to another shop, just to save 2 dollars.

What you do SDG is, as the add says, "let your fingers do the walking" & make a phone call or two, cheaper than fuel etc. Yep, I wouldn't do it either for the El cheapo things, but well worth the effort of sitting on your bum while having a cuppa & making a few Ph. calls if there is potential for worthwhile dollars to be saved. g'day Carl,
Your right ,Supercheap can have some great deals when they have specials on, but it pays to compare prices on those other small things. I have just finished wiring an 1984 millard with 12volt water pump, lights and power outlets. I had bought most of my wire and joiners ,cable conduit and fittings etc from supercheap. When i needed a couple of things i had forgot , to finish the job .I just walked into the local car parts bloke ( an auto pro franchise) and was very surprised to see he was cheaper on just about everything i had bought at supercheap. You live and learn i guess.
cheers John.

I think you might have outsmarted yourself there.
If youd got a written quote from the battery specialist and gone BACK to Supacheap you would have got another 10% (.80c) off.

Your going to be stressing over that I bet for days.... :-)

It is all the same with the large high profile chains whether it is car parts, hardware or electrical items. They have very cheap specials, for generally rubbish items, in there catalogues but make up for it on other products.

Your local Mum and Dad operator will overall have comparable prices and if they are good business people will provide better service. They usually are the ones also providing local sponshorship and donations to local charities. Does Supercheap support any of the local football teams?

Who do you think pays for the massive advertising budgets, fancy retail outlets and massive inventories ? Yes the customer does. These businesses also have many shareholders who as investors expect the largest dividend possible.

So be wary of the slick advertising.

I agree. Supporting local 'mum and dad' operators, is definitely worth it. The kind of advice and good service these guys provide can never be matched by the likes of 'Supercrap Auto' whose staff, let's face it, mostly have next to no interest in what they do (or knowledge). Back when I first began to tinker (with cars that is!) I bought all my first tools from there. I have since had to replace every of them with real tools from my local. Moral of the story. Should have bought the real thing from the start, as I paid for each tool twice! Okay you might be able to save a bit on things like oils, belts etc. but ultimately you should think about where you want your money to go. I for one would hate to HAVE to go to the likes of Supercrap, simply because there was no other options.

Pretty hard to find a "mum and dad" operator in the autoparts business that isnt a national franchise?
