Despite its appearance at the recent 2010 Sydney motor show, the all-new Nissan Patrol, powered by a 5.6-litre petrol V8, is still a year away from local showrooms. And fans of diesel power will have to wait up to three years for the all-new model.

The news was confirmed by the Chief Operating Officer of Nissan, Toshiyuki Shiga, on a recent visit to Australia during the show.

After a speech to the media declaring "Nissan has never been more committed to Australia than it is right now," he later admitted that one of Australia's favourite heavy-duty four-wheel drives had slipped down the priority list because of the Global Financial Crisis, and tough new emissions regulations in Europe.

In the interim, Nissan Australia will continue to sell the current model 3.0-litre turbodiesel Patrol indefinitely.

"The program is alive but it is still under study," Shiga-san told the Carsales Network.

"One of the reasons we are delaying the decision on the diesel is the new emissions regulations in the European market. It is very difficult because it is a heavy vehicle."

The new Patrol is longer, wider, taller and heavier than the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series and shares some of its underbody and structure with an Infiniti SUV sold in North America and other markets.

The Carsales Network has been told that Nissan is yet to decide which diesel engine to use in the new Patrol. One option is to redevelop Nissan's current 3.0-litre turbodiesel to meet new emissions standards, another option is to use a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 from Renault. Shiga-san said, there was also a possibility of utilising a DaimlerChrylser diesel engine.

"We have three choices," he said, "and we discuss these matters."

When asked if there was a chance Nissan may not build a diesel Patrol at all if it becomes too expensive (the only likely markets are Europe and Australia), Shiga-san repeated earlier comments: "The program is still alive. But it is still under study. It will definitely be after 2012. We are only now developing the right hand drive [petrol version]."

The new generation Patrol was developed mainly with the Middle East in mind, which is a left-hand drive, primarily petrol-engined market.

I just wonder how long the factory is going to be able to justify making the two vehicles side by side.

Makes you wonder about the logic of a bigger car than the 200 series which is already perhaps too big..? The doubt surrounding the diesel version is also interesting, no way a 3.0 litre could power a vehicle bigger than the 200 series.? Lets wait and see.

I think Nissan are going to bolt two 3.0L engines together for the new Patrol. They could call it the "Double Bunger"..... HMMM.... I might put that to Nissan Headquarters....It has a certain ring to it..... Michael

Road Warrior

Me hopes like hell that this Renault engine, fo rth enew Patrol, will be a lot better than the last one

Tick Tick Tick !

Long live the mighty 4.2.. I cannot wonder why Nissan do not spend money on the heads, and the turbo, and make this beast, emmision complient
It is simply a brilliant .. but often lazy motor

Cheers

Well Bucky, to give you an idea, Ford forked out $20 Million to make the Falcon's 4.0 litre straight six emissions compliant, and that is an Australia-only engine of around 50,000 units a year. So for Nissan, a global car maker with global engines, you'd think the costs would be higher, but those costs would be spread out over more production numbers. But I guess they have their reasons for not going ahead with the 4.2 anymore. Do we know what those reasons are?? I don't know alot about them

Lol!!, Mike, But hang on Just maybe the 5.6 L V8 petrol is not such a bad move from Nissan actually!!, There is a lot of Toyo 200s with the 4.7L V8 getting around as there is a big difference in new price to their diesel partners

If the Nissan V8 had more Power and same economy as Toyo ,Then i reckon they would be on a winner, depending on their pricing of course It would not be hard to improve on toyos effort on building a V8 anything as far as i;m concerned,,,Lol,

Cheers Axle

Gday Axle, you may be right, But i'm still annoyed with myself, a few years back when they were running out the last of the 4.2TDI's.. Me stupidly thought there was an all new Patrol coming end of 2007 as promised... so kept my current Patrol. I could have updated a few years and now have a Patrol with a few less clicks on it. Anyway no more new 4x4's, they can bury me in this one, i think it has a few years in it yet, even at 305,000ks.... Michael

Too right Michael.

Mine's just ticked over 160,000. At 25,000km per year I reckon the old girl's got plenty of life left yet.

And besides, I don't really like the look of the new one anyhow......

"It would not be hard to improve on toyos effort on building a V8 anything as far as i;m concerned"

a little comical-Toyotas V8 diesel uses less fuel than Nissans 4 cyl 3 litre? Even my 1HD-FTE uses less diesel than the ZD30, and both have more power.

In practice and on government figures.
I know the gov figures are a crock of sh** as far as normal use goes but they are a comparison to a standard.

the sad thing for Toyota drivers out of this Nissan debacle is that with no competition Mr Toyota hasnt any price check.

The only niggling question in the back of my mind in buying the Patrol last month was that - I figured it wouldn't happen and it looks like thats the way its going to play out.

Still one should be grateful that you can still buy live axle coil sprung cars with strong transmissions and strong petrol motors in this year of 2010.

G/Day Robin

Nissan might decide to to assemble a few more with petrol motors re: the current models, not many new ones around at the Nissan dealers up here in Qld.

I guess they can sell them side by side, like they did with the D22 and D40 Navara for a while.

If its anything like the Infinity/Nissan Amada mentioned in the article then it's certainly a BIG wagon.

I parked next to one in a carpark last night in San Diego, I was in my F250 anf it seemed about the same height an size as that.

Nissan Amada/Infinity

Nice flair at the rear wheels suitable for bush bashing,

Bruce

I have a 2006 4.2lt diesel Patrol (one of the last) with which I had gas put on to so now runs on diesel and gas, the difference is when travelling with my slide on camper on board (about 1ton) is over the Liverpool Range on the New England Highway at 90+k in 4th gear, before the gas I was down to 3rd Gear on the same range. The fuel economy is the same with or with out the camper on which is about 11lt - 12lt per 100k travelling between 100 and 105.

I reckon that is better than petrol,,,, Long live the 4.2
