Hi folks, curious to know if any one has travelled the Buchanan Hwy, NT, the dirt road from Dunmarra to Timber Creek. I was thinking of taking my off road van that way during the dry season. Are there any big dips or creek crossings to be careful of. I would expect the road to be corrugated and gravel generally.
Any ideas ot hints. My van is 21ft, tug is Patrol 4.2D. Cheers, Bob.

From memory the creeks are slight gradients in and out of causeways.

Hi Bob,

I came along there in August and thought it was a good dirt road. The Top Springs to Dunmarra end had just been graded and was like a highway at that time.

I don't recall any areas of concern with regards to dips or creek crossings, but my van is only 11ft long.

The pub at Top Springs has camping out the back and is a friendly place to stop for a drink.

There's also a good free camp at Jaspers Gorge (no facilities). This is at the Timber Creek end.

Hi Bob, lived at Yarralin, near Vic River station, for 18m, when road is "fixed" you can take a car along it, after the wet it can be bad to impassable so check reports before travelling...... it washes out completely at Dashwood and in parts of the gorge and stays wet for weeks, even the grader got bogged and was stuck for 4 weeks at Jasper
Jasper Gorge is a really nice spot to camp and the water hole there has some really BIG barra in it, also the Dashwood crossing has good barra in it, fish on the Northern side of Dashwood........... looks nice to camp at but save camping at Toppy or Jasper

Road is OK. Just watch out for semis and cattle transport. They appreciate a call on the UHF that you are getting off the road for them.

Cheers

Howard

Went over this road in August with a standard 18ft van. No problems at all - graders were working from both ends & the Dunmarra/Top Springs section was in top condition. We made a 3 day trip of it staying at Top Springs & Jasper Gorge (loved this spot). Go for it... Willy
