Hi guys,
Had a quick look on the
forum and didn't see an answer.
Looking at a 2nd hand camper that has a ball hitch fitted. I'd prefer one with more articulation eg Treg. Can a ball hitch be removed and a Treg or similar fitted? If i did this l'd get a trailer company to do it - just didn't know if it is possible.
Also, l'd need bed end flys fitted. Does anyone know a company that sells them for DIY fitting? I'm looking at the ones that stay permanently on the van with shade cloth sides
Thanks to all

Trailer couplings are usually welded to the point of the A-frame but can be easily removed with an angle grinder or careful application of an Oxy Torch.
The new coupling is then simply welded in place of the original.
Any trailer company, engineering firm, or welding
shop should have the skills to do the job.
Bill.

Just had the same done last week.
Angle grind the welds out and use an oxy cutter for the inside welds.
Weld the new hitch on.
About an hours work.
Did not take as long as I thought.

I was under the impression that hitches should not be welded due to the fact it weakens the heat treatment process.
I have a caravan & off road trailer & both hithches are bolted on. In fact one of the hitches has a notice that says "Do not weld"

You can buy both weldable and bolted Hitches, The weldable ones are made of plate steel not cast. If you are removing a welded Hitch and not good on the welder you can bolt the new hitch subject to the A frame being strong enough. A Trailer parts
shop can supply both the hitch and 8.8 bolts to suit. Failing this if you are to pay somebody to do the job get them to fit a base plate for a bolted hitch. Thus you can now change out with ease if ever required.

Thanks for
clearing that up. That makes sense.
I am glad the caravan manufacturer chose to bolt
mine on because I have my van permanantly on site so I unbolted the hitch so no-one can nick the van!

Dont you believe it A wire rope and a flat deck and it will be gone.
With battery portable grinders nothing is safe any more.
Several were taken off steets in
Adelaide last year One had a trailer lock on it and they just skull dragged it onto a flat deck apparently.
