It had to happen I guess and with previous posts saying just how nice the sealed road is then I guess it won't matter to some but to others.....
Cessation of Recreational Access to
Lancelin Defence Training Area
This broadcast is sent on behalf of Defence Support.
Recreational access to and transit of the
Lancelin Defence Training Area is no longer permitted at any time.
Defence has hitherto permitted transit through the
Lancelin Defence Training Area to access Wedge and
Cervantes on the basis that it was the fastest, most direct route. Providing this transit access represents a significant liability to Defence given the risk associated with the presence of unexploded ordnance throughout the Training Area. This liability is compounded by the routine abuse of the transit privilege by some recreational trail bike riders, 4WD enthusiasts and campers who stray from the designated transit
routes.
Indian Ocean Drive now provides a sealed, high speed alternative to transit through the Training Area and negates any requirement for recreational access. In the coming months the Training Area
boundary will be reinforced to prevent unauthorised access. Additional
signage directing people to Indian Ocean Drive for North South transit will also be erected.
The closure described in this notice will not have any impact on the access privileges enjoyed by legitimate users such as Bee Keepers and the Yued people. Applications for or enquiries regarding access to the Training Area by others who consider they have a legitimate requirement should be directed to RTAM.WA@defence.gov.au .

Damn
That area was just a great area. I cut my teeth on 4x4 learning up there.
I hated the idea of this road going through. I did not even like the Navy track going through.
While I only ever visited
Wedge Island I totally supported those
shacks staying there and the remoteness of it staying as
well.
Loved it when it was just a myriad of blown out sandy or rocky tracks. You could
camp anywhere. Fish anywhere. Drive anywhere.
Now - nothing.
Looks like I will be scratching the whole area off the list of
places to go.
Again I say damn.

Hi David, guess all good things come to an end eventually, but I'm with you, spent many hours in that area. Cheers

That is what happens when fools abuse the privelages afforded to them...

This is a real shame. I am glad we got to travel from
Lancelin to
Cervantes in January to see
Wedge Island and
Grey, and the fantastic drive through very different dunes to what we have in SA.
I still have some battle scars on the Jackaroo from some overgrown branches on the tracks, and the amount of kangaroos we saw was astounding. I guess the 'roos must be very wise, or equipped with
mine sweepers, because they were not to fussed on where they were jumping!
But as usual, it is probably the minority that venture of the designated tracks that have buggered it for everyone, including the
shack owners/lease holders of these fantastic and remote fishing shanty towns.
I like most people here on EO will always take the less travelled road at 30km/h rather than the black top. It is the only way to see the real Australia, rather than speeding past everything at 100km/h.

It's a real shame but if we igonre the bad behaviour of others all our great areas will end up closed.

Use of the
Lancelin NGFS range is going to escalate in the coming months because the government is about to
sign an agreement with the US to allow them to use it. Blaming off road users I think is little more than a convenient excuse.
