During the last few weeks a mate of mine has been travelling to and from Sydney. He commented to me that he has been having trouble finding unleaded petrol. It seem servos are going for the high octane unleaded, or the E10, and phasing out the standard unleaded.
Is this becoming normal pratice, or has he just not paid close enough attention?

I think it will be phased out sometime next year. All servos have to sell some E10 by Feb next year so i guess they will have to use unleaded bowsers and tanks for thet use.. My dates may not entirely correct but thats the guts of the story.. Michael

Another example of limiting consumer choice. High octane at premium price or E10 which will very quickly match unleaded prices with fewer kilometres/litre, not to mention the effect it has on fuel lines in mowers and whipper snippers!

Fuel figures using unleaded/ E5 added in Qld and E10.

Difference between unleaded and E5 was nothing, these figures are from many many Townsville/Mackay, Mackay/Townsville trips.

Average unleaded and E5: 24 to 25.5litres for the 400K at 100k/h.
Average E10: 28 to 30litres

Works out to be cheaper buy 95 octane.

Have a good one

Yep I found it cheaper to run 95 premium then standard unleaded. I find the diff is around 50 to 80 ks per tank. On my test hill with the boat on it is 20ks faster on 98 then 91 unleaded also. This is in 4th gear in a dohc 3.5 Jack.

Also I tried Bp 95 in my boat and was amazed at the diff, had to trottle back so I did not overrev, buggar need a bigger prop now lol.
Cheers Pete

Brands with less than five outlets should still be able to sell unleaded, I certainly pass two outlets on my way to work who still sell it.

Regular unleaded (91 RON) is to be phased out in all NSW outlets by July 2011 (biofuels legislation). Choice will then be E10 or higher octane unleaded which has a variety of names (Caltex Vortex 95/98; Shell Unleaded 95, V Power; BP Ultimate, Premium Unleaded, etc)
