The Government are trying to put Opal fuel in Arnhemland and Kakadu by mid December, in fact all fuel outlets in West Arnhemland have already complied.

This is a great thing in the prevention of petrol sniffing, I have witnessed first hand the effects of this terrible problem.

Today I was involved with a group that watched a promotion about opal Fuel, one of the biggest questions was about out board motors and it's effect on them.

The problem is that to make Opal fuel work, surrounding outlets need to comply as well, some of the outlets were not to keen because of fishing comps held each year, they felt that they would loose on fuel sales because of apparent problems.

Honda and Tohatsu have given there stamp of approval, they are in talks with Yamaha as well.

So if you plan to travel this way in the future, you can be sure that there are no side affect to your car or boat from this fuel.

I have no affiliation with the product and with the proof to show that there is a 99% chance of reducing the affects of petrol sniffing you can bet that when they roll it out I will use it with pride.

What do you guys think????

Agree with you totaly

At our store we only have opal and diesel
and I have heard that there is a push for opal all the way to Kal

We have a few in our communities that suffer the effects of a petrol sniffing history and it is very sad and not reversible

Loose a few sales or loose a few lives or quality of life - I know what I'd rather

Remember
Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly,
Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile

In no way arguing against the run of this thread, merely a point of associated interest. Having worked on literacy programs with indigenous students with sniffing caused damage, I came to the conclusion that the damage is reversible. Not sure however how far it is reversible, just that it is reversible. Not a fast or easy process however.
I also have swapped experiences on this with the Menzies Health Institute where some of their research was coming to a similar conclusion. We agreed that some kinds of education programs could rebuild the damage and that it was an area that needed a lot more research.

having been in Maningrida when it was first rolled out and having seen first hand the damage it does to kids i support it 100% ..............
I may add the we at Doomadgee have and will ONLY sell Opal as long as we are here, we even have been questioned by our own board as to why we need it and my answer is blunt, we will sell only Opal as long as we work here ....
I also have (someware packed away) detailed reports and tests from BP as to the changes made over the last few years and the effects long term on outboards and car engines and it is all "hype" made up by those against it, after all would a VERY big company sell any kind of fuel that has any potential to affect the warrenty of a car or boat engine ?????? NO as the liability would be far to big to carry as the car/boat engine manufactures would take them to the rails without a doubt .............

And no.... i have no connection with it as well, but i love kids of any kind, shape, race or background and it hurts to see the damage that it does, yes we can smoke cigs and we do get addicted and they do damage, kids only need to do it once and they are hooked and it ruins then for the rest of there lives .... we just finished filling up for the wet.... Opal cost us $120,000 to fill up, yep one hundred and twenty grand and can only get it from South Aust so have to freight it up ..... a childs life is worth what, a million, billion, priceless ???????
So in short, i back it .....

Hi Joe n Mel n Kids

I didn't realise that you had spent time in Maningrida, Doomadgee must seem like heaven after a lenghty stint in Maningrida.

Have a good wet.

Cheers

Hi Marc...
Maningrida was actually really nice, got to know some really good people as is Doomadgee, i would have to admit i, the kids and the missus are really growing to like Doomadgee and the people, well what can i say we seem to fit in really well, the kids have made some really good freinds to the point where Amy asked if we were going to stay forever as she loves it here and they are doing really well at school as well ....... but i LOVE the "saltwater" and fishing hence i really miss Maningrida but the kids rule our lives so if they are happy then i guess we stay put .. we went through the big cyclone at Maningrida and that put the geebies up us a fair bit ....
We will have a good wet, a fair bit better prepaired than last wet so all is good..
Cheers Marc

Hi Joe

Crossed wires there somewhere. It was the fact that Maningrida is subject to cyclone beltings that I was talking about. We went there in the late 80's, and after about three hours were oredred to evacuate. Had a troopie at the time, and had the springs flat with all the people that we got out of there, and the place was completely missed. Didn't matter, we had a seriously good night with everyone camping out.

I was under the impression that most NT communities now had opal, buit I guess I was wrong.

Cheers

Hi Boh Boh

I can ststae that here at Mulan, in Billiluna, Balgo, Ringers Soak, Warmun (Community not roadhouse), Frog Hollow, Wangkatjungka, Kupatiya, Bayulu, and a variety of other communities, opal is the only fuel for standard cars. Of course all still sell diesel.

There have been no incidents of sniffing in nearly 5 years, and the suicides have dropped from averaging 8 - 10 a year, to one in the last 3 years. Am I in favour of this petrol substitute, you had better believe I am.

I run my 4.5 kw Honda gen set on opal, and never had a problem, as well as our lawnmower and whipper snipper, and chainsaw. We have not had a problem.

Some of the above communities have placed by-laws into effect banning petrol on their lands. I agree with that two. My wife and I have already buried two nephews who suicided when high on petrol, we don't ever want to have to do that again.

Cheers

Is there a premium version? Some late model cars have to run 95/98 octane especially European. I had a Subaru Outback about 4 years ago that had to run at least 95. I had to get keys and sign for the petrol at Uluru. I have no problem with it at all. What happens now? Mike

The fuel has a hi performance additive now, this takes out the problems from before.

Premium unleaded will still be sold as normal, the question was asked well if you sell premium wont the sniffer just get hold of that, the answer was only if they can get hold of it, meaning that those that sniff the fuel will steal it from cars boats etc within there communities, these vehicles more often than not won't have premium fuel in them.
