Thinking about taking the camper trailer to camp Bridle Track Turon River but can anyone advise how serious the warning sign is about "no trailers"?
We are driving a Discovery 4 and heavy duty 4WD camper tailer - Can I safely ignore the sign or will i be looking for trouble? cheers David

Whilst a bit academic due to the closure, it is Monaghan's Bluff that would present any problem, however as long as nothing coming the other way it would 'normally' be fine I would say....

David,

As said it's closed and another forum says it's gated with no plans for it to be reopened.

My son on his L's once had to pass a camper at Monahans Bluff. It was very tight and I was in the passenger seat staring over the edge of a pretty big drop.

There is another track in the area from Capertee to Sofala through the Turon Gates that you can get a good high clearance off road camper through. It is single lane in some sections and no chance of getting past another vehicle.

Yes that track is pretty tight in places but there is an alternate way around that bypasses it. It's all good exploring from Capertee through to Hill End and down around Sunny Corner. The treks are in a little book about 4wd treks close to Sydney.
Abercrombie River National Park and caves is also worth exploring with decent camping spots. Mike

we have taken our camper trailer through there , we met traffic on the way down from hill end to the turon, and there was sufficient room to pass with caution - you would have to be prepared to reverse if necessary, though and there is no guard rails and a nice steep drop.Monaghans bluff was passable when we went through but we were very glad not to meet any oncoming traffic as it would have been impossible to pass - someone would have needed to reverse up to 1km back. Its the narrowness of the road that causes problems - you need to be prepared to reverse if necessary, and take it very slowly. There are wonderful campsites after crossing the Turon - we camped at the junction of the macquarie and the turon - very popular on weekends, but we had it all to ourselves midweek. We have a Hilux dualcab and a Cavalier offroad trailer with good clearance.

Hi David H,
Over very many years I have towed trailers all along the Bridle Track from and to both ends of the track. You can't do that now due to a rock fall at Monaghans Bluff. You will be fine if you travell in from the Bathurst side as far as Bruinbun to the camping ground there. You can explore further on with the vehicle only but you cannot get past Monaghans Bluff with anything but a trailbike from the pictures i have seen here on ExplorOz. A couple of Ks past Bruinbun the ascent to Monahghans Bluff begins. Do not attempt this climb as there are very few places to turn around in a mini let alone anything else. The Hill End section of the track probably can be traversed as far down as the concrete causeway on the Turon below Hill End. There are plenty of good campsites there but you can only access Hill End via Sofala from the Bathurst side and Ilford / Sofala from the Mudgee Road side or you can get there from Mudgee via Hargraves as can be seen on the maps.

Hope this is of some help. As I say I used to haunt the Bridle Track in me younger days but it has been some years so many things may have changed since then but I feel sure this info would be pretty accurate.
Cheers, Bruce.
