Karijini and North West Coast after Christmas time any good to visit?

Hi,
I'm planing to got visit Karijini NP and then drive back down to Perth along the coast, so I'd like to know if it's worth doing it.
Is it busy? Too busy?
How's weather? I know normaly it should be really hot and the wet season is comming, but summer this year still isn't actually here... on the other hand, weathes is changing quickly, it says rain and thunderstorms all week in Tom Price... Two days ago it said sunshine all week... Oh my, what to do...?
Other option would be to go down south and explore Esperance and around it, but I reckon that's gonna be crowded and weather says 18-25 deg all week... means no swimming for wifey, she thinks anything under 30C is freezing cold...

Any thoughts please?
Thanks
Manuel

Hi Wixxxxer

Depends on the temp & humidity, but Karijini is one of the best places I visited on our trip. I would love to go back there. Also I would like to recommend Ningaloo Reef, great snorkling on the reef. You only have to swim out 20 metres you you can see coral and lovely coloured fish up close.
Coral Bay is also another good spot to kick back. I would give Monkey Mia a miss, its too commercial for me.

Hope this helps, have a great trip.

ps. Esperance is very very nice as well.

Now thats having 2 bob each way.

Check the latest rainfall figures for points north, there have been some BIG falls up round that area, the rains have started.

Disco.

Hi Manuel

Expect heat.

Karajini is beautiful, but was pretty hot doing the gorge walks when we visited in May. We certainly welcomed the dip in the cool pools when we got to the bottom.

When holidaying in January, we chose places like the south coast (Albany to Esperance) and the Eyre Peninsula in SA - although we still struck some fairly hot days in both places.

South would be my choice, and save the north to enjoy when you can get there in winter.

just remember that when it says "rain & thunderstorms" in the Pilbarra it is also VERY hot and humid, Karijini is very nice but simply plan on it being very hot (good shoes, water n hat) ....... Coral Bay will be busy but well worth a visit as are all the other places stated ......

Hi Wixxer

I have not long spoken to a friend of mine at Ngurawanna Aboriginal Corporation, near Millstream National Park. He strongly advises against travel plans anywhere near the Karijini at the moment, and probably for the next 10 - 12 weeks, but it is of course for the individual to decided.

Ricky often time goes out and helps people, but will not be putting his vehicle, or himself, at risk for the next couple of months.

Cheers

Yeah, not the best time of the year to be visiting Karijini. Can get some really big storms that time of year, especially if there are cyclones about, and all that water ends up going through the gorges, you can come to grief with flash floods etc. And if it is not raining, as previously mentioned, it is just plain hot. And other than the gorges, not a great amount of cool shady areas to seek refuge.

On a positive note, it will be quiet...

Thanks again!!!

Hi wixxxer,
Karinjini is magical, we visited in Sept. years ago.
It was hot then ,but the build up had started early according to the locals.
There wasn't that much water around but the water was freezing in some of the deeper pools. It didn't matter how hot you were by the time you got there & It was too cold to swim Except for the really determined, then you had to climb all the way back up.
The rocks around the waterholes were quite slippery.
There was an accident with a 12 yr. old boy when we were there and the father had to carry the unconscious boy all the way back up to the top for help.
We didn't see it. This was not the boys fault. It's just that the rocks are so slippery.
There is one section where you go down a stair way & then the stairs stop when you're in a very narrow area. Should the river come down it would be like a giant fire hose on you.
We'd love to see all of this happening but from the air, or at least from the lookouts. This one I mention didn't have a look out. But we wouldn't go down into any of the gorges the river could run from way up if the head waters have big rains.
We wouldn't go there this time of year.
Coral bay has been ruined by overcrowding but this time of the year may be you'll have more room.
Kalbarri ,(Albany, can be cold & windy) & Esperance are good. Take care., safe travels. Bye Ma.

Hi again vixxxer,
Thanks to the moderators my first post with bad spelling has gone. Gratefully.
I've been reading through your replies but can't find the one which said that if the Murchison River comes down the view through" natures window " should be worth a million .
Cape Le Grand is very pretty too, but,can be cold & windy.
Re Exmouth, When we were there, there were a lot of people getting skin rashes, including me and the Chemist reckoned it was common for tourists in Exmouth. So take some paraderm cream.
We didn't go out to the reef, it was rotten weather when we were there. I've heard that there is a lovely bay on the other side of the Peninsular from Monkey Mia. I haven't gone into it yet cos too many other places on our list.
Maybe some one knows about it?
Wine glass bay rings a bell but that is in Tas. Maybe it's called something like that?. It looked lovely by the picture but we all know about tourist book photos!!
Take care, safe travels, Bye Ma.

Hi Ma,
We have visited Francois Peron NP last year, spent some 5 Days there, it was amazing! We've been on both sides of the peninsula and I can tell we loved it. Cape Peron on the northern most point was unreal!
We've been around Kalbarri, Geraldton, Dongara, Jurien Bay, Cervantes, Pinnacles Desert, Wedge Island, Lancelin. We've seen some places around Margaret River, Dunsborough, Bunbury, Augusta, Albany, Esperance. Cape Le Grand was the most interesting on the WA South Coast so far, now I'm thinking maybe leave Karijini for another (better weather) time and go South, explore Cape Arid. From other members' reports and from the wwweb it sounds promising! We'll see, nothing's decided yet...
Oh, btw. unfortunately I totally forgot to book early for Dirk Hartog Island, now it's too late... That's also one of the places I'd love to visit...

@ all of you, big thanks for your comments
