Buy it and drive it back to SA.
Then you must register it in your name within a period of ???. Anyone know it?
You will also get a refund of the unused part of the NSW rego. Not a full refund as I think it may be a refund of some tax or insurance part. Not sure. Someone will tell us the details soon.

There will be no refund unless the vehicle reg is transferred. They will only refund to the registered owner!

When we purchased a car in
Goulburn and registered it in the ACT we got the refund.
Maybe SA is different.

Okay Maybe I should add that the seller must transfer the rego to the new owner. Beats me why he wouldn't ask for the rego to be transferred anyway. Common sense. Then that makes the new owner the registered owner does it not.

You don't need to transfer the reg to become the legal owner, all you need is a purchase receipt when you re-register the vehicle in your home State.
You also need to be a resident of the State of registration to effect a transfer!
Why waste transfer money anyway?

I bought a vehicle in NSW some years back and took it to QLD. The remaining rego wasbe refunded. The remaining CTP was not.
From what I remember I was put on their papers as the new vehcile owner but paid no registration etc to NSW. Then took the vehcile to QLD transport to register. They removed the old NSW plates and put on the QLD ones.
To get any refund on the rego I had to send to NSW the confirmation that the old plates were given to QLD transport.
The amount of rego you get back will almost not be worth the effort.

G'day Mike, I suggest you have a look at the RTA (NSW) web site. I believe you can get a refund on the rego but there will be a transfer charge, apart from the
Stamp Duty. SA will also charge you for new plates I imagine. Anyway start with the
RTA & see how you go. cheers....oldbaz.

Mike, I just had a look at the RTA site. You must transfer rego within 14 days of
purchase & must be done in person...cost $28 plus Stamp Duty. This will cause
an automatic transfer to you of the Grren Slip Insurance (no cost). For this reason alone you may be advised to do this while in NSW. There is a form called..
Request For Refund Of NSW Registration-refunding registration when NSW plates
are surrendered in another state. Perhaps if you get one of those while you're
here as
well. I'd have a chat to your state rego office & get the local state of
play too, as they all seem to be diffrent. Hope this helps....oldbaz.

Ask the owner if you post the no plates back to him when you get home, let him cancel the reg & get the refund after giving you a discount off the purchase price.
It is not worth transferring the reg & then claiming the unused portion.

For once i agree with Shaker, seems silly to pay transfer fees in NSW and then have to pay them again in S.A

To get it registered here you will need to take it to regency or Sturt to get a number check, fill out some forms pay for rego and stamp duty, job done.
How would you transfer it to your name in NSW if you don't have a NSW postal address?

Not only that but NSW require you to have a NSW licence to register a vehicle in NSW. every time I go in lately the first thing they do is ask fro your licence.

I was going to buy a vehicle in NSW and I live in QLD.
The dealer said when they do that there is a way of getting a permit to drive it
interstate and register it there.
Maybe you should talk to the dealer as they should know.
Or the RTA
I think you also only pay Stamp Duty once as if you are transferring in your own name its different to selling it to someone else.
Dont know about SA but in QLD you can do it within a family and not pay Stamp Duty on the transfer.

Mike,
I live in ACT and have purchased several NSW vehicles over the years
NSW require rego to be transferred within 14 days
this can be avoided if you drive the vehicle to SA and register it locally within that timeframe.you dont pay Stamp duty in NSW.
you would pay stamp duty in SA and any other initial rego fees
You will most likely also have the hassle of getting a VIN inspection if the vehicle is less than 10 years old and wasnt purchased from a dealer.
you can get a reciept for the nsw plates off SA rego when you surrender them then apply to nsw for refund of rego ( this will be less some admin fees)
you can then find out from NSW who the CTP insurance was with . you then have to write direct to the insurer to get the refund of the CTP ( again less admin fees)
its all a pain in the butt however nsw will only register a vehicle in your name if you have a nsw licence or a customer number due to meeting certain criteria( I have one as a NSW property owner).
the sooner we abolish state governments and have 1 national licencing and rego system the better.
this is especially relevant as rego does not reflect ownership it just names someone ( nominated operator)to be responsible for speeding fines or to be sued in the event of an accident.
cheers
Howard

In SA you don't have to have a vehicle safety check when you register a vehicle, in facvt there is no annual safety check requirement for vehicles and trailers.

Hi Cruza,
I had NSW reg on my car and caravan, went to the SA registry and changed both over, all they wanted was the current rego papers and everything was processed on
the spot and walked out with the new plates.
The caravan to register in New south wales $386.00 in S A. $56. 00, I nearly fell over with shock.
All the best Warren.

You will have to have vechicle inspected when registering in Sa from another state
Its a identification inspection which is a visual on the engine number etc just to confirm it tallies with rego papers etc

Hi Mike
I recently purchased a vehicle in
Alice Springs for my wife. I brought it back to WA, and had to put it over the pits before they would put WA plates on it, even though it still had 7 months rego left, and it was from a registered vehicle dealer.
That may be a WA thing, I don't know.
Cheers

You don't have to get the vehicle inspected if you have owned the vehicle for over 12 months in another state, you just have to pay a fee.
Less than 12 months ownership = inspection if transferring interstate.
