Yes Pete, you wonder who writes this stuff. Even their lead picture of "the Birdsville Track" is clearly NOT.

Pete,
I think it's a typo, they must have meant weeks.

It's a great trip.

Cheers,
Bill

haha - yeah, I'm sure the person re-typing it thought '3 weeks' surely they don't mean 3 weeks... I'll just change it to days for them... haha

Obviously an error , we did it in 9 days this year , but that was moving consistently along, because of rain.

Would have preferred two weeks.

Hi Pete Mac, Two huge mistakes by the editor(s) I wonder if some 4WD legend has done the preface!!! Some will put their name to anything to get a "freebie" LOL. You should E Mail them & inform them of their errors!!Unfortunately the public in general read & watch 4WD material and take it all on board. They then believe that what they have read is gospel. They then start thinking that they are either very experienced or just become know alls.....poor publications like the one you have highlighted don't help people much at all. IMHO

I agree he must have meant 3 weeks, it took us that long but then we went to Rudall River NP for a few days as well. Simpson next, we will try and do that in the time as they said. It's a worry though and that's where people get them selves into trouble, they don't allow enough time to do these trip. It's a bit like Cape york people do it in 2 weeks from Sydney and Melbourne just to say they have been to the tip.
Happy travels

Hi Pete
All I can say is they have a very lot to learn, and that site needs a very good overhaul. Just looking a the picture of the "Birdsville Track" tells me that they really know nothing of Outback Australia and to label that picture the Birdsville Track, well what can one say. They should remember that anything on the internet is read by people world wide. Sure we in Australia know that it is complete false information, but try telling that to some overseas tourist that looks at that site for guidance.

Cheers

Stephen

Perhaps they used a trip planner that looked at the distance and applied a dirt road formula.

On the trek notes here, it says allow 16 days, but gives driving time as 1 and a bit days.

That looks like a nav note from my sons navigator for their Datsun 1600. Group A rally car with a fuel injected 2.4 in it. 3 Days. Hmmm maybe. I bet he would love to give it go though. Land every second sand dune? What do you think! Nah But just imagine being able to have a go like that. A few safety issues would need to be covered though. But . . .

I dont think the body would handle it these days. Forget it Phil and act your age young fella.

Its got to be a typo for 3 "weeks".

One day I will get there. Its in the bucket list. But not in the Datsun.

Phil

This is the extract from the link, it clearly say's allow three weeks to do it in comfort, not sure what you guys are reading???

Canning Stock Route
WA
Considered one of the most remote 4WD tracks in the world, the Canning Stock Route draws 4WD enthusiasts from all nations. There's a bit of everything along the 1619km route from Wiluna to Billiluna: Aboriginal sites, pioneer history, rugged ranges, sand dunes, and flora and fauna. Allow at least three weeks to do it in comfort.

When: Best travelled April to September.
Longest distance between fuel supplies: Wiluna to Well 23 Fuel Dump, 707km.
Rating: Very hard*
Other: All vehicles require permits. Permission to pass through the lands of the Gregory Lakes Community and Balgo Hills Community should be obtained from Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority (ph 08 9322 7044 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 08 9322 7044 end_of_the_skype_highlighting).

*Track ratings
Easy: Tracks are usually well formed and generally suited for towing caravans and trailers. A 4WD is preferred, with some basic recovery and communication equipment.
Medium: Tracks will require use of low and high range or are in remote areas where supplies and medical aid are not nearby. Most will involve sand, mud, creek crossings, hill climbs, rough corrugations or other difficult terrain. Not suitable for caravans or trailers. Experience is necessary, as are spare parts, recovery gear, communications, first aid and fuel, food and water.
Hard: For experienced 4WD drivers only. Vehicles need high clearance and must carry all supplies and communication equipment, as with the medium rating. These tracks are often remote; the terrain is rough and the going can be very slow.

They also recommend that Goog's Track is best from North to South. It is recommended generally that you do it South to North because of traffic and meeting other vehicles in the narrow bits.

We met a guy on he Gibb River rd who told us not to bother it is just a dirt road. I discovered it took him 3 days to go from El Questro to Derby. I asked about the gorges?? He said he didn't bother with them, didn't have enough time. Problem is he will tell people who don't know better that you only need 3 days to do the Gibb. Some people.

Someone must have changed it. I've just clicked on your link and it says allow three weeks to do it in comfort, not days! Maybe the author frequents EO and saw their mistake and corrected it.
