Hi all,

Can I use ( legally and securely) the seat belt catchers (what you put your seat belt tongue into). My idea is to put the engel on the backseat with the opening facing outward.

To secure it, I want to use a ratchet strap with the male part of the seat belt on either end.

Will it work and is it legal?

I cant put it in the tray as it'll be full of work gear.

Cheers Wilko

Hi Wilco,
Actually that is the same way I have set up my Engel in the back seat of my Hilux dual cab. I also made an angled timber base to sit the fridge on so it does not lean back on an angle with the base of the seat.

It's probably not legal but when you think about it there is nothing illegal about putting crates of stuff all over your back seat unrestrained.

Cheers

I forgot to add that I use a couple of adapted child restraint harnesses that loop through the fridge handles just for a bit of extra safety. these are attached to the approved anchor points behind the seat back.

Wilko,

Can you remove the back seat and is this a viable option for you. With my Navara Dual cab, I removed the rear seat and used the seat mounting points as anchors for the engel 40 litre. This would also give you enough room to run a two zone on the top if you so desired.

The other half of the cab I had a steel locker made up and bolted to the various floor mounts. It would allow for storage of valuables, computers etc and still had room to fit a couple of plastic bins on top.

The seat belt option may work to a limited effect but vibration etc and the movement of the fridge on the seat often causes the lap belt to slip down under the fridge. Without it securely anchored and or some form of cargo barrier, in the event of a sudden stop (like an accident), you can guarantee the last thing going through your or the passengers mind will be the Engel.

If you’re going to go ahead with the seatbelt option, get some wide self sticking Velcro tape from Spotlight and use this on the inside of the belt and on the body of the fridge where you want the belt to sit. Put the hook side of the velcro on the fridge and the fur side on the inside of the belt. Saves the kids sticking to it when you’re not using it for the fridge lol.

A happy xmas and great New Year to you. Mick

Hi Mick,

Unfortunately its a work car or it'll be ripped out as well. I wont be using the seat belt but the female part where the seat belt slips into. I was thinking of getting 2 male parts from a wrecker and get a loop stitched into it so I can then use a ratchet strap to secure.

Have a good xmas to you too I've enjoy your blogs Its made and kept me keen to get out and see some of this wide brown land.

Hi Wilko

Don't know of any rules anywhere to stop you setting it up like that. You are not modifying the actual seat belt which would have been an issue.

The advantage of doing this is you can be sure the mounts will handle the load in a big incident because the fridge is going to weigh less than a person.

I think I would be making sure the wooden leveller is securely attached to the fridge or otherwise held down so it can't become a missile.

When you get your latches try and get them from the same vehicle. They all look the same but have found slight variations that stop them latching properly.

Sounds like a sensible fix when you can't modify the vehicle.

Thanks Andrew,

Securing the wooden leveler is defianatly a go, I get the latches from the wreckers to suit.

Years and years ago when I used to have my VB commodore, and was driving between Sydney and the northern Flinders Ranges regularly, and then from he Flindrs to Perth. I brough a second front passenger seat. When in transit, I would remove the front passenger seat and leave it there, and bolt in a wooden base to the seat mounts for my 29L Engel. When I got to my destination, out would come the fridge base and the seat would then go back in.
Was a marvelous idea.
Now of course with my space cab RA utes, the little 15L Engels are on a shelf I made to go behind the seats.
Cheers,
Dion.
