i am a first timer on this so hope i am ok at this.well, my son ia 22yo and is planning a trip to kalgoorlie from gosford with a friend. he is leaving in 2 weeks time, travelling out north west through cobar, broken hill, port augusta then onto kalgoorlie. he has a fairly good ute, but is not very well travelled. he is a little concerned about having his tools etc. on the back, especially when they stop at night. they plan to stay at pubs, caravan parks etc. on the way. what is the theft rate like out there. any tips for this trip. he is taking water, petrol, spares. this question comes from a concerned mum who just wants her boy to arrive safely.

He'll have his traveling feet well oiled by the time he gets past Cobar. I wouldn't be too concerned. To really make it a different trip (depending on his friend too and circumstances); I cannot see why there would be a problem if he just sleeps in the back of the ute, or lays a swag or tent down just off the road somewhere - There's more boogie monsters at Pubs and Caravan Parks and his tools wouldn't go missing.

It's a fairly well travelled route, I wouldn't worry about him too much!! He wont be too far away from a helping hand if he needs it!!

Cheers
Alan

Hi jassa

I dont know about the areas he will be traveling but here in WA i use to travel for work from the coast to Tom Price and staying at the motel i would take all my gear including spare wheels into the unit ,
if i forgot to take uhf and vhf aerials off they would not be there next morning.
tell him to have a good trip.

regards dave

I would not leave tools unattended in the back of a ute anywhere. If he has to do it then at least try and cover them or better still put them in a solid box that is too heavy to lift or so secure that a thief would have to go to a lot of trouble and make a fair bit of noise to open it.

As for the trip, I drove between Sydney to Perth four times back in the early 1970s when 500 ks of the road was still unsealed. I slept in the car beside the roadhouses out in the desert and I still do that today. The large roadside rest areas are a good place these days and they usually have plenty of people in them each night. You can find them in readily available books like Camps Australia.

I was told by one of the roadhouse owners that about 400 cars per day were driving over the Nullarbor back then. Today it probably looks like the F3 during peak hour so he is not going to be left stranded if anything happens to the car.

Tell him to drive steadily and don"t push the car too hard. He will most like encounter scorching heat out on the Nullarbor and you often run into a head wind when you get out past Port Augusta that seems to last all the way to Perth. When you combine that with a loaded car and a driver trying to maintain high cruising speeds, it will stretch any car's cooling system to the limit.

If he takes his time and has plenty of rest breaks, it should be an easy trip and I am sure he will enjoy it.

Suggest that you upgrade to NRMA Premium Cover.

Be sure to carry enough water and food for emergencies. Carry spare fluids such as engine oil, tran oil, coolant etc. Also, get a workshop manual for the ute. Even if you don't have the knowledge to fix a problem, having the spares plus instructions can help someone else help you.

BTW, it's lovely country out that way. There's a nice rest area, west of Cobar - Meadow Glen. Fuel up in Cobar. Avoid stopping at Wilcannia.

Best wishes for a safe trip.

All good advice above. I wouldnt carry any more than one jerry of fuel as it is
freely available, & petrol always has an element of risk. Secure the tools & gear
& avoid travelling after dark....oldbaz.

All good advice above, done the trip across 4 times, would not leave anything in the back, however I have camped a K or so off the road several times with no problems.
No great drama's as its sealed and a lot more people travelling than you would think.
