Gooday, We are going to Tasmania in Feb. We have a Landruiser towing an on road caravan. We want to take the road that goes from south of Steppes to near TUnbridge it is called Interlaken Road. Can anyone tell me if this a good road or a goat track please.

We haven't travelled this road for a few years now, but it is your typical country gravel road, if recently graded will be good, other wise few corrugations and loose gravel.
Watch out for log trucks.

Hi David,
obviously you are going on the ferry, so don't forget to make sure you know the travel conditions...... e.g. regarding gas bottles, fuel etc. Others have run into trouble before, so be aware.

Hi, mate ,just back a month ago, and there was nothing about gas bottles or fuel on the ferry, he had heard that you have to remove and store bottles but only had to turn them off, no fridge running etc,
Cheers Des.

Hi Des

These conditions should be on your ticket. They are on the Spirit of Tasmania website.Spirit of Tasmania dangerous goods

Gas bottles (within code) on your van can be taken, including any gas contained there in when correctly connected to your caravan or camper. Other gas bottles must be transported separately, and collected on arrival.

For this reason, we decided to leave our camp cooker and gas bottle at home for this trip just to make it easier.

Fuel jerry cans must be empty and dry of residual fuel before they can be carried on the ship. A full fuel tank in your vehicle is acceptable.

When we went in 2006, used fuel cans also had to be filled with water, but no mention of that now.

We left our fridge (12 volt) running. Gas fridges must of course be turned off.

Have a wonderful trip.

Just read the bit about water in the jerry cans - it was on the link I gave above, near the bottom of the page

"In the event a petrol/diesel can has residual fuel inside, and thereby may have a dangerous gaseous/air mixture, passengers should fill the canister with water before being allowed to travel and to remain with the passenger vehicle."

Only have to hand over loose gas bottles ie those not attached to front of caravan / trailer. No fuel to be carried in any type of jerry can on or in the vehicle while on the boat.Loose gas bottles are loaded into a trailer on the boat and you pick them up again in Devonport / Melbourne depending on the direction travelling
