Hi All

I have again been asked about the Cooper Creek ferry, so I have again spoken to Patsy and Etadunna Station and one of the chaps at the DTEI in Port Augusta. (My usual contact is on annual leave, so I have spoken with someone new)

Speaking with Patsy first and she gave me the latest most reliable local details.
On Tuesday night they had 37mm of rain and today they had 25mm so far and it was still raining. The ferry was still running but for how much longer will be the big question.

My next phone call was to the DTEI, Northern Office in Port Augusta. My usual contact was still on annual leave and I explained the situation and was put through to someone else in change. I was informed that the Birdsville Track that has been under water is now officially open to 4X4 vehicles only because of sections still are under water, the water are at a safe depth to cross. Those that did not want to take the chance, the ferry is still running. When water levels do drop more, the ferry will then be taken out of service until the next body of water arrives which no one seems sure of just how long it will take. Once again it will be a guessing game with just how much water does come down still unsure, but it looks like that when the ferry does go back into service, it may run to well into mid to late 2011. So at this very early start of 2011, it looks very much like the Track will be cut for nearly all the tourist season again and those that missed out in 2010, will have another chance again this year for a ride over the flooded Cooper Creek over the Birdsville Track.

My next question was the Birdsville Track going to be closed, as it was still open . The chap was not aware of the rain around Etadunna Station and said that he would make a few phone calls.

The reason that I asked this question, was Patsy said that even though the Track was open, vehicles were cutting it up and Patsy thought that it should be closed to stop further damage. I notice now the whole Birdsville Track is closed yet again due to very wet weather and muddy conditions on the full length of the Birdsville Track. 2010 set records on the number of times the Track was closed due to wet weather and lets hope that 2011 does not follow in the same trend.

It is bad enough for anyone wanting to travel the Track, but the locals have had enough of the rain would love to see some blue skies to dry things out.

Until my next update, hopefully in early February with the very latest details and ferry figures.

Cheers to All.

Hi Brian

Thanks for that, but that is what the forum is all about, giving accurate information when asked. This latest information will not be shown on any other form of either paper or internet details and again the readers of the forum will be the first to know.

Cheers

Thanks Stephen.

I am planning another trip to the Birdsville races - Innamincka - Longreach - Winton - Cameron corner - on to the 2011 gathering at Silverton in Sept and it would be great to have the roads passable.

Look forward to your updates.

Hi Cuffs

We all hope that this is the situation, including me, as we are heading to similar areas hopefully this year providing the roads are dry.

Lets all keep our fingers crossed.

Cheers

Hi Anthony

Thanks for that. Like I have said a number of times here on the forum, in early 2010 when I started reporting about the possible closing of the Birdsville Track due to flood waters coming down the Cooper Creek, I never had any idea that it would carry on as long as it has and now looks very likely again to have a big effect for the 2011 tourist season.

I do not mind at all giving these follow up and will do so right up until the ferry sits high on its blocks again.

Cheers

Hi Stephen, this is my little bit of light relief from all the horror around us at the moment. We are quite safe as is all the family but I work for a Federal MP and it is our electorate which is bleep tered by the Lockyer Valley disaster. Forgive me if I don't talk about it here.
It has been raining in Birdsville for the past two night and days - good falls too. Someone who will be happy to have the Birdsville Track open is Tom our faithful supply truck driver - he is making an enormous round trip to deliver food to Birdsville when he can.
The road from the east (Windorah/Quilpie) has been cut more than open and that's the other way supplies come in. The plane from the east is not big enough to be able to fly food in (and way too expensive). Most people have been able to return from holidays and the children are waiting to get back to school.
Ian is twiddling his thumbs - he's made all his frames and just waiting until the road opens and he can get a truck into Birdsville so he can get started. There is no fishing report yet but he's very hopeful - all the little ones he caught last year should be eating size now.
Time to go to work now..... take care everyone.

Hi Ruth and Ian

I like thousands of Australians, can not appreciate just the sheer terror that so many Queenslanders have been put through over the previous days and our thoughts and prayers do go out to all in these very sad times. Great to hear that you are both safe and well and we now know that there is a very big road to recovery that is going to take years to complete.

Water over the Track falls into insignificance compared to the heart aches that you are now going through.

Tell Ian the fish all still growing in size, and even the ones at the ferry site are still nothing to rave about. They have been getting the odd good sized fish, but there are many being caught around the 6" - 10" in size. Like I mentioned the other day, they are the right size out in Lake Hope......but the rain will stop that.

Take care and Fiona and I send our deepest thoughts to all.

Cheers

Hi Baz

It was not the information that you were hoping for and you many be able to postpone your trip for a little time in the near future.

At least we all know that you and others will have another chance in the very near future to cross over on the ferry.

I will keep you and everyone else up to date over the coming weeks and months.

Cheers

Fascinating stuff. FYI, the BVT is currently closed to all vehicles, it is not open to 4wd's as stated above.

Thanks for the reports Stephen, there was talk a short while ago about possible plans to lengthen the ferry so that people towing campertrailers could use it. Have you got any more news about this.

Thanks Jon

Hi John

When I made my last official report in December, it was confirmed by the DTEI that the ferry will be lengthened to 10 m so campers can be taken over on the towing vehicle.

When I asked the other day, work has not commenced yet, but it was due to be completed by February 2011.

Cheers

Thanks for the update Stephen as said b4 always a good read and very informative. I am thinking whether to go back upto Birdsville in March as I missed crossing the Coopers via the ferry as when we crossed the desert in June they closed the Birdsville track and we had to return via Quilpie and down to Broken hill and on to Adelaide. If the track is still closed in March might have to go a different direction and head for the Border Track instead

Hi Vern

As they say, there is still a lot of water to flow down the Cooper yet and it will be a big guessing game as to when it arrives. At least you have a little time on your side and I should have clearer updates closer to your time of travel.

We to had to make the very big detour via Quilpie and Broken Hill in August from Birdsville also, and yes a closed Birdsville Track put an end of another ferry ride. We will get back again, next time when it is dry I hope.

Until my next updates.

Cheers
