Hi All,
I need help, I have just had my 60 in with our local mechanic to try and identify a noise he heard while doing a rego inspection.
He found the source, it's the top universal joint between the upper and intermediate column shafts. Unfortunately he is very reluctant to do the job. (I now understand why).
Chasing around all over
Wollongong not one mechanic wants to tackle the job do to the complexity.
A review of the Toyota Service manual and you can understand why. Subsequent discussions with our local Toyota dealer who incidentally were fantastic about it had little success. The majority of components required to recondition the steering column are no longer available through Toyota and sourcing after market parts is nye on impossible. Suggestions of replacing the column with a good second hand one has met with a fruitless search due to the age of the vehicle (no good ones at any wreckers).
Can anyone offer any advise on where (or who) I could get my steering column serviced/reconditioned?
Thanks All

hi gwadir
sorry i cant help with parts but clearly remember
mine emitting a clicking or clacking sound and also same thing on a friends vehicle
i traced it to a collar from memory that was just above the universal on the steering shalf where there was a stubby grease nipple we greased the nipple and the noise stopped
both vehicles had only done low km's
mine 20t km's and the other a bit more at that stage
but i fail to see what all the hoo haa is about the repair job it's very straight forward
sometimes i wonder about some of these
so called trained mechanics abilities??
cheers
