Hi
I am after suggestions for bush camping ie no ammenities (back to basics camping) anywhere between Gympie and
Gladstone and as far inland as
Monto. Access by 2WD. Plan on just taking a swag and a bit of tucker. Fishing would be an advantage.
Thanks Kc

What about Kroombit Tops? You can usually get a 2WD up there with care (but probably not just now).
Or Mt Walsh (just south of Biggenden) of any interest for a night stay? There is a
toilet block there though.
Cheers,
John

There is a nice little spot camping beside the Kolan River along
Kalpowar Rd North-East of
Monto.
Heading east along
Kalpowar Rd from the Bruce Highway and you will cross the Kolan River the 1st time at about 22km and the 2nd time at about 28km.
There is a little known camping reserve along the banks of the creek on the right hand side that can be a very nice quiet place to spend a few days.
The creek is flowing lovely and clear at the moment and will be for a long time to come. There are catfish and perch and some other types of fish I do not know that we have caught in the creek at this spot.
Be sure to show respect to local landholders though.

Yep that is the one thanks Chisel.
hehe!!!
Sorry about that everyone....momentary lapse of common sense.
Was picturing myself heading from the eastern end of
Kalpowar Rd but the words coming out didn't match.
Yes.......please head west from the Bruce Highway and the distances to the Kolan crossings will be correct.

Is this area large enough for a couple of off road vans? Sounds like a nice spot to
camp

Hi Marian,
In a normal season I would say yes you could find a way to get a couple of off-road vans past the first few trees into a more open area.
The problem is for the last year and especially the last month, the Kolan has been running higher than it has for probably about 15 years and I have not been able to get up there since early December to see how this has affected this spot. It most certainly has been under water in the last few weeks as the water line up the road at the first crossing of the Kolan last weekend showed where it had been at least 6m deep at the causeway.I tried to get through last Saturday but the levels were still too deep to get up there and it was running at only 0.4m. The river dropped by Wednesday and traffic is just starting to get through so I am heading up there for a few days tomorrow.
For anyone heading along
Kalpowar Rd with the speed of the river at these causeways please don't be tempted to cross at anything above 0.3m and that is only in a heavy 4wd. I have seen people washed off at 0.4m on the markers and now even they have moved since the flood and you cant trust the heights.
