Hi there all.
I currently own an 09 Nissan Pathfinder and am looking at fitting a set of all terrain tyres as i have recently moved up to the top end and am looking at exploring both Litchfield and Kakadu over the next couple of years...i have narrowed my choice down to either Bridgestone D694's or Coopers A/T....What are everyone's thoughts/suggestions ????

Hey,
Just put a complete set of LT D694 275 65 17 (Standard Size) Bridgys on my GU4 Patrol after a month of research. I was looking for Light Truck construction this time as I will spend a bit of time heading down bush tracks with my fly fishing. I did look at the Coopers and the first obstacle was they didn't make the exact size for our Patrol and other than dealers who sold them 4WD Commentators who get them for free and people who followed in blind faith believing the hype there wasn't a lot of positive reports out there. Pat Callinan swears by the Coopers, but I have a earlier DVD series of his swearing by BF Goodrich. This will fire up a hornets nest I know, but the there are a lot of dissatisfied owner out there who didn't read the small print regarding the warranty on the Coopers and by all accounts, there was many who said the Coopers were very ordinary in the wet on sealed roads. My Patrol has done 228,000 klms and this is only the 3rd set of tyres that have been on it. This includes the originals. There is the small point that the Bridgys cost me $500 less than my best quote on the Coopers. I have done more than 100,000ks out of my last 2 set of tyres, so couldn't see the benefit dollar wise to pay $500 more. Mind you I did get some quote for the Bridgestones upmaround the Coopers price by non Bridgestone Dealers and I would have still bought the Bridgestones.

John & Lil, you have touched on an important point.

In another series Pat Callinan was using Pirelli Scorpion ATRs and swearing by them too. In each case he was sponsored by the manufacturer (which, quite properly, he disclosed). The same goes for other people like Ron Moon and Vic Widman, who also have sponsorship deals.

The tyre companies (or, in the case of Coopers, tire company) exploit the reputation of such people for marketing purposes. Nothing wrong with that, but you need to bear it in mind.

I don't doubt Pat's integrity. (Or Ron's, or Vic's.) Coopers, BFGs and Pirellis are probably all very good tyres. But if you accept sponsorship, you lose your status as an independent expert commentator in that field, because of the appearance of possible partiality. I would never base a purchasing decision on the opinion of someone who is receiving sponsorship.

BTW, I have a set of the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs that need replacing. If anyone from Pirelli (or BFG or Coopers) is reading this, please get in touch: I am sure we can do a satisfactory sponsorship deal.

Another one for the BFG's. I run 265/65 17 on my 07 pathy. They are a little bigger than standard but dont foul the guards. After seeing my mates 1 month old coopers fall apart i personally would'nt run them on my wheelbarrow.

I run Coopers but recommend you consider BFG's.

Hi Dawg

have just been through the same dilema myself for my 06 Navara. it came standard with the older version of the bridgestone a/t's and ive got nearly 60,000kms from them, mostly on tarmac. my choice was between cooper A/T's, BFG A/T's or the bridgestone d694 and after lots of research ive decided to go with the BFG's. i'm getting them fitted tomorrow so will see the results in the coming weeks.

as with a few others, i read lots of reviews and the key is to filter the ones that have the bias in them (not easy sometimes!) many bad reviews put me off the coopers, stories of them falling apart and poor service etc. the fine print on the warranty is another negative.

the bfg's had resonable reviews and a mate of mine had previously recommended them so will see how they turn out!

of your 2 choices, i'd say based on the reviews i've read, avoid the Coopers

cheers

Jack

Dawg, one other point are you looking at the ATR or ST. The Sts do have very good off road traction, but as others have said are dicy on wet tar, most likely due to being a hard compound. Mate has Sts and swears by them in Muddy paddocks but is getting rid of them soon.

Hi Dawg,

Ive got 694's on the Pajero and BFG A/T's on the Rodeo. Both are good but i believe the BFG's are slightly better offroad and the 694's slightly better on road.

Hi there all,
Thanks very much for the feedback regarding my question everyone....i think after reading them all and a few other threads posted both here and elsewhere and chatting to a few of my workmates, the winners clearly are the Bridgestone D694's.
it is a pity that coopers hypes their product up as i was under the belief there was no better tyre.
i may have a look also now at the pricing of the BFG A/T's...
Cheers
