Assuming you going mid-year (if it ever stops raining) an alternative way back from Kalgoorlie would be the Great Central Road through to Ayer's Rock unless of course you want to travel the Nullabor.

How long are you going to be travelling? Are these overnight stops? You could spend a lot of time in WA and go to Karajini, Mt Augustus, Esperance and surrounding national parks etc, etc.

What type of vehicle are you travelling in?
You could do Kununurra to Derby via the Gibb River Rd and still see Windjana Gorge plus others, you'd miss the Bungle Bungles though.

You havent included Karajini which is very worthwhile.

In 5 months we got from Brisbane down the coast via GOR to Adelaide and up centre to Darwin.

Took nearly 14 months to do the rest, down the west as you list and back to Brisbane.

Eddy,
Are you prepared for offroad or are you sticking to the black stuff?
I personally do not plan ahead and do not set a strict timetable. Recently spent 7 weeks travelling from NSW to the Gibb River Road and back with only the final destination and return date in mind. Maybe we were lucky but it was the best trip EVER. One exception, choose the time of year carefully.
If your prepared to Bush camp you will save a few dollars here and there.
Back to your question- Above Lawn Hill (Adels Grove)is King Fisher Camp on Bowthorn Station which is great and will lead on to the Gulf Track , Lorella Springs is also well worth a visit.
Gregory National Park, Gibb River Road (or day trip to Emma Gorge and El Questro), Horizontal Waterfall out from Derby($$$), Barn Hill Station below Broome.
You will meet lots of friendly people on the road and being flexible will allow you to benefit from information passed on as you go. (Funny thing, bush campers seem friendlier than when at caravan parks.)

Enjoy your trip.
Bob

The gem of our travels was probably the Kimberley including the Gibb River Road. If you are towing and not set up for the rough stuff but have a suitable vehicle, leave the trailer in Kununurra and take a tent. That way you can do a full loop including Purnululu, and the double up of the highway doesn't take that long.

You can read about our GRR adventure in MyBlogs - look for 2008.Blogs for the following year which covers much of your NT and Qld plan are not yet up.

So many other places you have listed are ones we have enjoyed, but we took nine months (over two winters) and didn't see it all, doing a lap quite quickly. Apart from the Kimberley, the rest of WA has been done in earlier holidays as we live in WA.

If you are time limited, better to spend less on fuel and see more in a relaxed way; say northern territory this time and save WA for another year when you have more time.

Just saw you reply above about your vehicle. Of course lots of people hire a 4wd camper from just to do the GRR loop so that may be an option.

Hi Eddy,

I think you have at least a years worth of travel there assuming you want time to explore a bit in each location. We have travelled to many of the places on your list and you can read about that in our blogs - but we have taken several trips to cover that ground. I think the suggestion to focus on one area and do that at a leisurely pace is a good one. In 4 or 5 months doing a loop up through Mt Isa and Lawn Hill, across to Kakadu and Darwin then down through Alice would be a good start.

The other thing to consider is that there is so much to see that one can become a bit overwhelmed with new experiences - another reason to travel at a pace where you can take in all the new sights and experiences.

In you VW you will not be able to go to places like the Bungles (4WD only). Often the best places are not the those on the high profile tourist circuit, but those a bit off the beaten track and maybe requiring 4WD for the last few kms.

But one easily accessed place in WA is the Stirling Range NP. It has a bitumen road through the middle. Also Cape le Grand NP in WA is easy access.

Cheers,

Val

Afternoon. your comment got me thinking im trying to do too much all at once..or it was a good excuse to get me away from work. Yes, convinced myself that I will have to change vehicles (unfortunately).

All this lovely advice is so welcomed and appreciated.

Like your quote.

Kind regards,

Eddy
