Hi All
To those that read this and live outside South Australia, much of outback South Australia was drenched with up to 170mm of rain yesterday as an aftermath of cyclone Yasi. One such place that is now stranded is Mount Dare.
EO Member Jeff that manages the Hotel has just been on the radio and said that there has been more than a metre of water through the place, including the pub. Dave has been stranded at New Crown Station trying to bring supplies back to Mount Dare, while Dave's wife, Melissa and their 2 children have been evacuated by helicopter to
Oodnadatta. The
population of Mount Dare has now halved, with Jeff, his wife and their child the only people staying on. Jeff said that all roads in the area are likely to be closed for up to 3 weeks and are all torrents of water.
Jeff now said that the big clean up will now start, with most of the freezers and fridges ruined from being under water.
Like all EO viewers of the
forum, I wish Jeff and his family all the best in these trying times.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi Ruth
Great minds think alike. The first thing that I thought of was those mulga snakes and fierce snakes looking for high ground.

Hi Stephen,
thanks for the update.
It is difficult to comprehend the amount of damage that has been done to so many over the last few months with fires, heavy rain and flooding.
We wish Jeff and everyone else out in small communities, stations and other properties (who don't get the same media and goverment recognition) all the best and we are thinking of you.
regards

Hi Fred
Like many people here on EO, we have been through Mount Dare many times and it is very hard to believe a metre of water through the place.
Jeff will get through it.
Cheers

Hi Gary
Jeff was not looking for any donations. As for assistance, that is the very big problem, there is no way of anyone getting in there to help out, so they are doing it though. The helicopter was at
Oodnadatta and that town is also cut off from the outside world. Station people being what they are (As though as old boot leather) will get through it and when the roads are open, they will all be helping each other out.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi Graeme
Thanks for the link, the pictures are unreal. They had the TV news cameras with Trevor the other night and they filmed
William Creek under water and the sight from the air was unbelievable, water as far as the eye could see.
Thanks again for the link.
Cheers

This
map of rainfall for past week explains why Mt Dare has had flooding.
Hope all who are flood/cyclone/fire affected manage to pull through.
Cheers,
Val

Hi Val
The map sure does show us all the amount of water that has been dropped all over Australia. The pattern of rainfall was crazy, as her in
Clare we only received just over 20 mm, yet
Burra which is around 40 kilometres east of
Clare and usually a lot drier received over 75 mm of 3 inches of rain in the same period.
Cheers

Thanks all,
We only just got back on line after jury rigging a power supply for the computers & phone lines.
We lost the southern side of the levy bank sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning, the water came up to the floor of the old
homestead around midday, then the northern side of the levy burst & started to let the water out so we effectively had a river running through the pub compound.
For those who have been out here the water came up to the underside of the dining tables in the pub & got to within 2 or three inches of the bottom of the generators.
The SA
police sent a light aircraft over during the day & decided to evacuate us out by rescue helicopter because there was a chance of more water coming down the creek, we sent Melissa & the kids off with them yesterday evening but decided to say on ourselves to see what we could salvage.
This morning the water level has dropped to knee height in the pub & we are trying to clean up as much as possible.
Dave is trying to get back in sometime today by station helicopter to help out.
When the water dries up & the roads open then we will have to have a look at repairing & improving the levy banks.
Thanks for all the support that the 4wd & traveling community has given us over the years & we will be operating as usual when the season starts in a month or so.
Haven't seen any snakes yet, they probably left before it got too wet!

Hi Jeff,
You're in our thoughts mate. Take care and good luck with the clean up.
Our club is involved with cleaning up Murphys Creek here in Qld, after the Jan 10 flood, and that was an amazing amount of water that went through there, but I must admit to finding it hard to imagine a metre of water through Mt Dare! I mean, it being desert and all... water to the dining tables.... where we sat and ate our lunch last July! Bugger!!
Hope all ends
well out there Jeff, although knowing how stoic "outbackers" are, I'm guessing this is just another page in the book.
Cheers
Brian

Hi Wooly
I put the post up as Jeff is a regular here on the
forum and people outside of SA might not have heard about the floods up north. You are not alone wishing them all the best for their clean up.

Thanks for that. Like I have said above, I am not sure other members were aware of the situation that Jeff was facing and knew that like me, everyone was thinking of him up there and to give them some moral support.
Cheers

Jeff,
Thanks for the heads up and I hope you all recover quickly as I guess you will be gearing up for your peak season. The
Bourke Outback Trek appreciated Mt Dares hospitality in Oct 2009.

Jeff,
Cannot believe this - Ian will be really surprised tonight when I show him. He didn't believe me when I told him after Stephen's post the other morning. Sorry you've run out of cold JIM though...... LOL. Take special care.
