Depends what's wrong with it & how much work you do. If they have to remove the bull bar & disconnect the winch before pulling it apart there will be another 2 hours labour to add to any parts needed. Often it's a simply clean, grease & possibly some new seals which won't cost much but eaqually there could be rusted parts or seized solinoids to replace.
Best maintenance for a winch is to opperate them every month whether you need it or not.

Really, it's just a simple matter of Googling 'winch repairs' but try clicking here.

I was more after the industry that does them.

Mechanics: work on cars
Auto elec: wiring/install
4x4 shops: install/sell

Normally where ever you buy them from will either service them or have an approved repairer. Some distributers also do installation & repairs (eg:Ramsey in Seaford). Electric motor rewinders would also service winches.

This is not a recommendation. Just to cover any commercial crap etc.

Seeing that ARB sell them why dont you go and have a chat with ARB at: Shop 1/ 111 Gladstone Rd, Rockhampton.

Hi Dave,

I have read on various forums that Mal Leslie is the man when it comes to repairing & modifying Warn Winches. He is located in Melbourne.

I had a Superwinch X9 serviced By a Hoist and Winch Workshop in Bayswater WA. When pulling it out of a recently purchase Cruiser if fell out in bits! Cost $120 which included two new spacers for the drum. I would recomend that you try a Crane and winch mob over a 4WD shop thus missing out on the premium we all seem to pay for our chosen past time.

Depends where you are in NSW, but most decent 4wd shops would do it for you without a drama. There is no major science some some simple principles.
When you say it has seized up does it just not operate or you can't turn the drum with the clutch disengaged?

Interestingly when I was trying to find out info on the drum brake in Melbourne not one ARB outlet could tell me how to correctly tension the spring in it. That was 2006 so things may have changed but the only place I got a straight answer was Leslie's in Heidelberg.

Not that I wouldn't install mine myself, but if I was in the market for a winch I'd let a 4wd retailer install it, but when it comes to servicing one I reckon I'd go to Leslies or somewhere similar. They also gave me the advice I needed on making them more waterproof.

All the details are on my old website which while not having been worked on for years is still there. http://4wdstuff.davejones.com.au/subdomain/4wdstuff/Other/XD9000%20rebuild.pdf

Dan,
I took about an hour to free up the leaver to disengage the clutch, But still no movement. I've pulled it out now and am just waiting for some free time to take it down to ARB in Port Macquarie.
Cheers Dave.

Surprise Surprise lol

Mate if you have a manual there easy to do yourself or download the manual from Warn,I'm not a mechanics A#@$hole but did mine...Warn 9.5XP after just 2 months (seized)

Remove all battery connections first and isolate ends with electrical tape for short out or just remove @ battery.

Just make sure the sleeve in the gearing goes back in the right way (straight end or champher)..The gearing is all together so you wont get ball bearings etc dropping all over the joint if your not sure what will happen..

Secondly they are a bad design allowing water into the electrics...I blocked both the holes and sprayed mine with lanolin (was told this by Warn repairer but ARB said warranty would be void if i did this,Its a crap Warranty anyway and is void soon as you go through rivers and ARB'S out to help -Go figure),it wont (lanolin) affect the electrics...Then re-seal.
I also sealed the motor end cap to water will not penetrate.
Its quite possibe its the brushes seized at the motor end,if your doing it yourself you'll see as soon as you take motor end cap off..There easy to free up the WD40...etc

I did not touch the clutch in the drum because if its assembled back wrong can be bad and the winch let go while using it (there was no need to touch it in my case)

Ive made mine so NO water gets into the electrics. It may need a breather for moisture next time i pull it down but doubt it...

Make sure you buy the right grease for gearing it does matter.

If you cant be fagged i'd recommend these guys too.

Goodluck

Oh if the cost is to much to replace parts I'd recommend Tigerz winch with 3 year warranty not 1 year...

if you want abit of an idea of what's inside a winch and what's involved with stripping it down and rebuilding it, then have a look at this thread from another forum. http://forums.overlander.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=68990

Thank's guys for all the info, I'm going to pull it out tomorrow(sorry I think it will be today now LOL) and check it out. ARB in Port Maquarie can reco it, But I was wondering about price compared to some of the now cheaper winches like Tiger or Iron Man.
Cheers Dave..
