Done that some 18 months back
Yes same shoddy workmanship.

Double sided tape came adrift..

The fix......SICAFLEX

Love that stuff

Removed Air cleaner, removed crappy tape, cleaned for what seamed 1 hr.
Out with the SICAFLEX, 2 thick beads around the air cleaner.
Re-bolted it to the inner guard.
Went into air cleaner box with heaps of "goop" on finger, and thickly smeared it around the inside of the join.

Waited 2 days.

Fired up the Poootrol, hand over snorkel (with beak removed)

Stalled in 5 -10 seconds
Success..... Happy

Then did the Canning Stock Route, and the Kimberley

Cheers

Hi Bucky, re Sicaflex , it is pretty rare down here in SA, could you please tell me which Sicaflex product that you use , I looked it up on the net and there are heaps of different products , a lot are 2 pack by the looks , I usually use Silastic 762 which does a good job , but always on the look out for a better product,
Thanks Cheers Des.

Des
I used 255 Extra

Normally associated with windscreens, but hey the area I needed to use it on was flexable as.

May not be technically correct but it sticks like "schyte to a blanket"

Yeah +1 for me, had my mechanic check out my Snorkel(Nissan) before big trip just to be sure and found shocking joins between guard and engine bay, his standard upgrade was to remove original section and modify with some 100mm (approx) hose.

A timely reminder. I have had this problem with 2 x GU Patrols. One local dealer wondered why I wanted the snorkel it to be waterproof.

In January I decided to check the newer 4.2 Patrol before heading off to do Balfour Track in NW Tasmania. Again, no seal, and the original foam between the air filter box and the guard. Piles of sikaflex and the job was done properly, and truck survived a few puddles. That snorkel was fitted by a large dealer in the top half of Sydney.

I am surprised the dealers don't take it a bit more seriously, or at least read the fitting instructions, to avoid being sued for drowned engines.

hi beergutz
when i installed my safari snorkle i wasn't confident that the seals were going to remain as sealsfor very long
so applied a good layer of roof and gutter silastic to all joints and had no problems that was 13 yrs ago and still ok

and if need be at some stage it can be got apart be simply sliding a razor knife through the joints
cheers

Toyota 79 series is the same from new very shoddy set up , you have to seal them at the joint on the mud guard . If you don't you will get water into the intake and that will cost big bucks , so anyone with a snorkel check the complete intake system.

Stick with Safari snorkel as it has standard intake fittting so you can fit differnt heads.
I have always fitted my own or my mates as you cant trusta dealership to do a good job.

I drill and repaint all holes to stop corrosion and all joints a connected with sicaflex urathane sealant.

Also if snorkel runs along quater panel fill gap with sicaflex to stop debris building up and eventual causing corrosion.
