There has been a number or questions asked of late re fuel consumption of various 4WD vehicles:

I have a 200 TTD (July 2010 model) which I drove from Melbourne to Terang in the Victorian Western District near Warnambool, on Friday and then back again this morning.

Filled up prior to leaving and did 517Kms for the whole trip. On return filled up again and it took 49 litres.

Internet fuel calculator tells me that is 9.7l per 100kms.

Speed limits strictly adhered to (have to because of a zillion speed cameras in Vic) and in view of the aforementioned figures I think it is pretty good for a 4.5 TTD motor.

When towing our 2.8t caravan I never look at how much it takes or what it costs to refuel as I don't want to induce a instantaneous heart attack. I do however watch the fuel guage dropping before my eyes which is stressful in its self. (LOL).

G/Day Dust Devil, .... The trouble is mate, people out there would really like to know the fuel consumption towing that 2.8t caravan,.. You have all the power in the world to tow it, but whats it cost to do so...LOL... So many different vehicles to compare these days.

We have a scan tool installed in our new 200TTD (not quite 2 months old) - we towed our 2 tonne off-road poptop from home (Geraldton) down to Dwellingup south of Perth a couple of weeks back into the usual super strong headwind - when we arrived our fuel consumption was reading 16 litres per hundred. On the way back sitting on 95kph without too much wind we averaged 14l/100

Pretty happy with it our old Jeep would have stopped dead on the way out!

I replied to Robin Miller below which included towing figures and conditions etc., however I am interested as to whether your After Market Scan Gauge returns a different figure to the OEM fuel usage computer.

We have just arrived home after 10 months and 36000km travelling anti clockwise from Gold Coast in our 2008 LC200TTD.

Towing a 24' Jayco Sterling with an ATM of 2750kg, we averaged a shade over 22l/100km. Our best ever average on a trip, without towing was 10.6l/100km on a run from Gold Coast to Sydney a couple of years ago. Wind from behind all the way.

The wind does make a hell of a difference and on one sector into a strong headwind, south from Kunnunurra I averaged 28l/100km....just when the fuel is at it's most expensive.

Wow! That's worse than us we just returned from a 10 month jaunt around the country with a Jeep Wrangler towing our Coromal PC541 and she chewed threw the petrol but not that badly - at last I feel a little better, sorry its at your expense.

Don - I'm thinking that your figures are the most up front and accurate I've seen posted on any forum and that 36000km sure is sufficient distance to flatten out fluctuations that are seen in shorter ie one or two tank runs. A friend of mine tows his Bushtracker everywhere and his 200TTD returns similar figures to you.
I have a D40 and tow a 1.4 tonne camper and over the long haul it returns an average 14.5 ltr/100km - friends with the same vehicle claim they get 10-12 so I guess I must have a heavier right foot. What I'm trying to point out here is that there are so many variants when travelling ie vehicle setup, van setup, road conditions, weather conditions, wind, how much of the run is uphill......downhill etc etc etc.....that unless there are two identically set up vehicles travelling in close convoy then comparison on fuel usage are at best 'ball park'.

I have replied to Robin Miller below and included Towing figures in different conditions etc and they come near Don Miller.

It all depends on the terrain and/or the weather conditions. Different combination's of same return different figures along with how you drive the rig.

In hill territory, as long as there is no tight bends I will just use the TTD to its ability and stick with the speed limit whether its 100, 110 or whatever, and don't worry about how much it uses. I just accept that Towing is a much higher fuel consuming activity.

Also, around Melbourne, day to day travel returns between 12.5l - 13.5l per 100kms depending on how I drive the vehicle.

Thanks for that DD - I had a lengthy conversation with a 79 Series owner with the V8 TD up in a park in Emerald last year and he told me he was getting similar figures as well. When all things are considered you've got to be happy with those numbers really from an engine of that size.

I don't worry about the fuel my 200 series uses, I worry about all the engine oil it uses when towing.

One Litre of engine oil every 1800k.

Perhaps Toyota could start expressing oil consumption in l/100k as well.....I guess yours works out at 0.05 l/100k!

Bow & Nan

I am with you all the way on this one, however my 200 doesn't appear to use that much oil (yet) so hopefully it will stay that way. I do keep a close eye on the oil though, just in case.

Now Phil G - I wouldn't expect anything less from a dude who travels with the Timboon, KKamper geriatric. (ROFLMAO) By the way, he has gone all things Ifone-ish now, yep! Ipad etc etc, reckons it makes him 'time' not waste it.

Hi DD

Hope it holds that way.

If you can keep recording the figures , accuracy will only come over time an a few thousand Km's of recording.

I have been trying to get accurate figures on my car , even ensuring it is always filled at same pump and that level guage shows it flat (passenger in or our of car can change fill by a litre).

However I came up with a new variable the other day - depending on wether the car is used on flattish ground or the drive is thru hilly country , there is a bleed on fuel from my sub tank back to main tank and over about 10 fills now the amount required to top up the sub tank has varied from 2lt to 8lt.

G'day Robin & all the others above.

The trip to Terang and back is what I would call virtually 'flat', just a few 'little dips & climbs', so it was an exceptional fuel usage figure.

On a trip from home to Angaston via Murray Bridge ( the back and short way) it returns 10.6l per hundred kms, and does the same if I go on to Alice Springs and back via the same route to see my brother.

Now Towing - Weeeeeeell! thats a different matter. I towed a trailer full of his workshop bits & pieces (thingy's) from Alice Springs to his son's place in Angaston on my last trip there in the 200. Head wind to Cooper Pedy = 16l per 100kms. 15l per 100kms there after. Dumped the trailer and home to Melbourne, back to 10.6l per 100kms.

I use either of two BP filling stations in Melbourne and the same BP's in Nooriupta SA, Cooper Pedy and Alice Springs, all of which have relatively flat filling pads, so it seems to be about as accurate as I can be.

Towing the 2.9t(Loaded) Jayco Basestation, everything above turns to absolute Chit. Hills will be between 18l -20l per 100kms and head winds just increase that exponentially depending on wind force and direction.

If it is a tail wind with the caravan then its 'Giddyup time' and the problem then becomes making sure I can stop the mother. The Twin Simplicity suspension is electric braked on all four wheels and I just drive to the conditions at the time, so all is good.

When towing I tend to not look at how much fuel goes in, or the credit card amount when paying, I just accept that costs a bit extra and thank the almighty I am not doing it 24/7 (LOL). The only thing I keep an eye on is the fuel gauge, which seems to move downwards before your eyes, so that I know when I have to schedule a fuel stop.

Regards

If you can afford to buy a 200 Series TTD you can afford the fuel IMO. LOL
As for towing the 200 Series TTD would have to be the best vehicle going and the fuel consumption figures I am seeing are excellent. What price do you put on the enjoyment of the trip when towing with a 200 TTD, it makes it so much easier and relaxing, hell thats worth $5c a litre to me..! LOL

Hell dude I am not complaining at all, just informing all those who have queried what a 200TTD fuel usage is.

"What price do you put on the enjoyment of the trip when towing with a 200 TTD, it makes it so much easier and relaxing, hell thats worth $5c a litre to me..! LOL"

I just can't match your $5.00, however will $4.99 do. (ROFLMAO)

As you said - it's much easier and relaxing and this thread will be my one and only interest in a 200 TTD fuel usage.

Have a good one
